Basketball Spotlight AC Showcase 8th Grade Top Performers Part 2

Andrew King (RIP City)

The Basketball Spotlight Atlantic City Showcase 8th Grade Division brought in some of the best talent from the East Coast. Here is Part 2 of our top performers.

Atlantic City Showcase 8th Grade Top Performers Part 2

Andrew King Forward (RIP City) – King is a combo forward that stands 6’6. He has a high school varsity frame with a developing game out to the 3pt line. The semifinal game we saw he hit a 3ball with a nice looking stroke, finished well around the basket and ran the floor hard and was able to get a bunch of rebound put backs. On the defensive end he excels blocking shots and rebounding the ball. He has to be one of the top Rising 9th grade prospects in the Philly area.

Kieves Turner Guard (RIP City) – Turner is a stone cold scorer. He can score from all three levels and one of his strengths is his sweet stroke from behind the arc. He has good size and strength at this level and he plays his role for the team and understands what he needs to do for his team to win which many times is to take over the game offensively.
Dapree Bryant Guard (RIP City) – Bryant is a compact strong point guard that keeps his dribble and doesn’t get in trouble on the court. He understands how to run his team and also navigate the pick and roll. Right now he loves to attack the basket and can finish with either hand. Dapree needs to work on his jumper so he can keep defenses honest.
Kareem May Guard (Brooklyn Rens) – May is a fast strong NY guard that commands respect by the defense. He navigates the court and is always looking to get a piece of the paint either to drop a dime to one of his teammates or score for himself. Kareem is a competitor and this was evident as he led his team to the Semifinal.
Myles Foster Forward (Brooklyn Rens) – Myles is a wide body big that has a nice skillset. He has soft hands and can finish around the rim. He also has a nice stroke from the FT line. Foster has a high IQ and understands what his capabilities are from the forward spot and he plays to his strengths.
Terrence Clarke Forward (Expressions) – Clarke probably was the most under the radar prospect with the most upside that we saw in the 8th Grade all weekend. He is a long wing forward that also can play point forward and seems like he is still growing. He seems to always make the right play either facilitating for a teammate or scoring a bucket and he can guard multiple positions. Terrence has a good stoke from the 3pt line and can get in the lane when he wants either to make a pass or score. Clarke has to be one of the top prospects in New England and we will be monitoring his progress.
Karl Jeannot Forward (Expressions) – Standing at 6’5 Karl is a combination of strength and athleticism. He is always ready from the drop off pass when his guards drive the lane and he finishes at a high rate. Jeannot also runs the floor really well in transition and rebounds and defends well for his squad.

Basketball Spotlight AC Showcase 8th Grade Top Performers Part 1

Cameron Byers (B'More United Thrill)

Basketball Spotlight Atlantic City Showcase 8th Grade Analysis

Looking at the Pools coming in everyone would have put their money on a B’More United Thrill, RIP City, NY Lightning, and Playaz Final 4 but it always seems like the Atlantic City Showcase is the Basketball Spotlight tournament that major upsets occur every year and this year was no different. NY Lightning got upset in the Elite 8 by We R 1 and Playaz got upset in the Elite 8 by Brooklyn Rens which nixed the re-match occurring of the Semifinal MADE Hoops game between NY Lightning and Playaz. B’More United and Rip City handled their business and played in the Semifinal with B’More United winning and We R 1 won a close one against the Brooklyn Rens to punch a ticket to the chip. We R 1 was overmatched by a very talented B’More United team and lost 70-40 in the chip. We believe that B’More United Thrill has to be considered a Top 5 8th grade team in the country as they have been proving it on the court. As a note they also had a tough Pool win against the Playaz.

AC Showcase 8th Grade Top Performers

Cam Byers Forward (B’More United) – Cam is a strong 6’5 big that can play physical or with finesse. He can play at the high, mid or lost post on offense. His strong frame allows him to post up with his back to the basket and go to work as he can finish at a high percentage with both hands. Cam also likes to receive the ball at the high post and either knock down the 12-15 foot jumper or attack the basket off the bounce. He had 16, 17, and 16 points in the Chip, Semi, and Pool game against the Playaz. In those 3 games he was also 13-18 from the charity stripe which is 72%. Cam came to play and was the X factor for B’More United this past weekend.

Jordan Toles Guard (B’More United) – Toles right now is always the most athletic player on the floor as was evident in the chip when he caught a back door two handed alley oop that sent the crowd into a frenzy. What we liked in Toles maturation is that he is starting to try and balance out his scoring and facilitating. In the past Jordan was always looking to score but now he picks his spots and takes more of a facilitating role on the team. He made a lot of nice passes racking up assists when we were watching. This transition is a look into the future as Toles will more than likely need to move to the lead guard if his aspirations are to play Major D1 basketball. His jump shot looked better and with continued reps it could become the final piece in his position change. Toles scored 11, 10, and 18 points in the Chip, Semi, and Pool game against the Playaz.

Caleb Dorsey Forward (B’More United) – Caleb might be the best overall prospect on this talented team. He is the tallest player on the team at around 6’6 and he already has the skill set of a Wing Forward. He can really shoot it from the 3pt line and has a good enough handle to drive to the basket from the wing. One play we saw him grab a rebound and go coast to coast and finish with an And 1.

Adrian Baldwin Guard (B’More United) – Adrian is a lefty that loves to beat his man off the dribble and get into the lane and finish with the floater. He can also knock down the 3 ball but getting into the paint is what he does best. Baldwin is also a pesky defender and an adequate passer from the PG position. He finished with a game high 20 points in the chip.

Keshaun Hammonds Guard (We R 1) – Hammonds is a skinny long combo guard that looks like he is still growing. He has a nice 3 point shot and is fearless when attacking the basket. Right now he is a more of a scorer than a facilitator. When we watched him against the Brooklyn Rens he was the difference down the stretch as he made a tough contested layup in transition and then calmly knocked down 2 FT’s to seal it. He had 14 points in the Semifinal win and finished with 7 markers in the chip.

Hakim Byrd Guard (We R 1) – Byrd is a smaller guard that is always in attack mode and is fearless. He can knock down the 3 pointer or get in the paint and finish around or over the bigs. He scored 11 points both in the semi and the chip.

Ahmir Harris Guard (We R 1) – Harris is a strong guard that handles a lot of the point guard duties. He never seems to rush, handles up and your face defensive pressure and always makes the right play or pass. Right now he is more a facilitator than a scorer. Ahmir loves to use his strong frame to drive and kick to open shooters.
Jamir Watkins Forward (We R 1) – Watkins is an undersized forward that has to play down low due to necessity. He does the dirty work of rebounding and having to guard usually a bigger player on the other team. He finishes well in transition or around the basket. He will move more to the wing as he continues to refine his skillset.

Diary Of A Baller: Terrence "Big Smoove" Williams (Clinton, MD) Final Entry

Williams Headed To Gonzaga College High School

What's up basketball world!

Well, this is my final BBall spotlight entry and it's also my last week of middle school basketball. So this week I will run down my elementary and middle school career. At times it's hard to believe that high school is approaching because the time has gone by really fast.

I started playing when I was like 5 years old with a county team in Maryland (Forestville Falcons). I started playing AAU when I was 8 years old with the famed DC Assault (Assault). From 8u-10u I played with Assault, picking up 8th in the country at 9u AAU Nationals and 11th in the country at 10u AAU Nationals. When 10u hit, I went to Nike Team Takeover (TTO) where we placed 5th in the country that year at AAU Nationals. This was also the time when I really improved my game beyond the five position and became stronger in the four position (S/O to Coach Jack Brown for pushing me in this direction). Somewhere during this time is when Mike Melton gave me the name "Big Smoove". Thanks Mike for pushing me in this game as the BBall Spotlight tournaments were good opportunities for me to play with other players across the region and country and improve my game.

In 6th grade I then moved to ETU Select. I think this season was my breakout season because I started to get my name out there a little bit. This year we ranked 8th in the country. 7th grade I went back to TTO. We placed 4th in NYBL that year and 4th in AAU nationals. After the season I reclassified into 2020, but still played with 2019 the entire season with Team Rio in the summer, and during AAU season, I played with my home team TTO. With Rio, we won Fab 48 and with TTO we were runner ups in the Made Hoops league and top four in Peach Jam.

My last year of middle school has been a exciting. With my TTO teammates, we've accomplished a lot but it's just the beginning. We're playing all 15u events this spring and summer to get ready for high school. All in all, it's been a nice journey so far with a lot of good experiences and lessons learned. During this time, I've had the opportunity to see the country, learn under some great coaches, and play alongside great players from across the country. In the end it's like a big family and because of basketball, I have friends across the country.

Also this week, I made my high school decision and will be attending Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC! I loved the feel of Gonzaga from my shadow visit and think I will thrive there. I'm looking forward to the next four years. This weekend I played my final two PYBL middle school games (PYBL is a local DMV area league). I have been playing in it for 3 years. We won the championship by 1 and completed the season undefeated. This was a good way to end my PYBL middle school career.

I want to give Mike Melton and Basketball Spotlight a big thanks for giving me the opportunity to do the Diary of a Baller. Thanks for the support too. In closing, always remember to keep God first in whatever you do and do not let the attention and positive or negative feedback of others affect you. Keep working everyday and prove people who doubt you wrong! That's how I've been succeeding, by working hard everyday (in school and at basketball) and keeping God first and not feeding into the hype. Again, I want to thank Mike for letting me do these diaries.

Peace!

Signed, Terrance (with an "A")

Basketball Spotlight 6th Grade Mid-Season Report

Riverside Hawks 6th Grade

The Basketball Spotlight Tournament Series is at the halfway point. So it’s time for our mid-season report. Next we will take a look at the 6th Grade Division.

Basketball Spotlight 6th Grade Mid-Season Report

Frontrunner For Team Of The Year: Riverside Hawks- The Hawks got knocked off in the Clash For The Cup after winning the Tip Off Classic, but should one of the favorites for the Atlantic City Showcase. They have been winning at the Spotlight for the past few years and have the chance to take home a few more banners. We expect to see a determined squad in America’s Playground.

Frontrunner For Coach Of The Year- Daniel Colon (Riverside Hawks)- Colon coaches both Riverside’s 5th and 6th Grade squads while being successful with both. He has a proven track record especially when it’s time to win the banners. I’m sure he will have his crew ready to go the rest of the season.

Player Of The Year Candidates:
Francisco Mattei (Riverside Hawks)- Mattei powered his way past defenders in the Tip Off Classic. He has a strong frame and knows how to use it to his advantage. He is looked upon to do a lot of damage and we will get to see him up close at the AC Showcase.

Andrew Rheubottom (Team Melo)- Rheubottom was a major reason why Team Melo won the Clash For The Cup and will be one of the favorites for the AC Showcase. His size and versatility makes him a difficult match-up for players on this level. If he continues this hot streak he could bring home the POY honors.

Surprise Player: Zion Cruz (Team IZOD)- Cruz came on the scene this year and has been impressive especially in the scoring column. During the Clash For The Cup he put up serious numbers regardless of the competition.
Surprise Team: Team Melo- This newly assembled squad not only packs talent but proved they can put it together by winning the Clash For The Cup. If there is any team that can knock off Riverside from winning the Team Of The Year honors it could be Team Melo.

Basketball Spotlight 7th Grade Mid-Season Report

Team IZOD 7th Grade

The Basketball Spotlight Tournament Series is at the halfway point. So it’s time for our mid-season report. Next we will take a look at the 7th Grade Division.

Basketball Spotlight 7th Grade Mid-Season Report

Team Of The Year Frontrunner: Team IZOD: IZOD was extremely impressive during the Tip Off Classic and possess one of the top rosters in the country. When they are on their game it’s very difficult to knock them off. They are undefeated on the 7th Grade level and will be looking to cement their fate with a championship at the AC Showcase.

Player Of The Year Frontrunners: Kino Lilly (Team Takeover)- Lilly showed his confidence was brewing at the Clash For The Cup. He shot the ball good from the perimeter especially from the 3 point range in the championship. He has the ability to keep this hot streak going.

Tristan Jeffries (Team IZOD)-Jeffries was totally outstanding during the Tip Off Classic and if he keeps this up he has a chance of taking home the POY title. He’s willing to play both ends of the floor which is rare but important on this level.

Coach Of The Year Frontrunner: Reggie Carter (Team IZOD)- Carter has proven before that he can get it done in the trenches. Now he might have the talent and the foundation to make another run for Team Of the Year. I wouldn’t bet against him.
Surprise Player: Drissa Traore (PSA Cardinals)- I heard a lot about Traore but was even most impressed when I saw him at the Clash For The Cup. His size, movement and attempt to create plays made him one of the most intriguing prospects in this event. He has the chance to be something special down the road.

Surprise Team: PSA Cardinals: The Cardinals didn’t win a Spotlight crown yet but the progress they made from their 6th Grade season has been tremendous. Don’t count them out as they enter the AC Showcase.

Basketball Spotlight 8th Grade Mid-Season Report

Team Takeover 8th Grade

The Basketball Spotlight Tournament Series is at the halfway point. So it’s time for our mid-season report. We will start off with the 8th Grade Division in which we saw a lot of talent.

Basketball Spotlight 8th Grade Mid-Season Report

Team Of The Year Frontrunner: Team Takeover (Black)- TTO remains undefeated for the season after winning the Clash For The Cup. They have one of the most talented teams in the country and have a chance to run the table without. The only team that might have a chance to dethroning them might be New Heights as TTO might be making the move to 15U the rest of the year.

Player Of The Year Frontrunners: Terrence Williams (Team Takeover)-Williams showed dominance in the Clash for The Cup and other events TTO won. He is a stat stuffer and high percentage scorer. He’s one of the most consistent players in the country.

AJ Hoggard (Team Final)- Hoggard has made the most Spotlight appearances and represented each time out. He has to be regarded as one of the top floor generals in the country and has improved physically in terms of size, power and speed.

Ryan Myers (New Heights)- Myers performance at the Tip Off Classic keeps in the POY talk. He one of the most explosive scorers around and will have the opportunity to increase his chances at the Atlantic City Showcase.

Coach Of The Year Frontrunner: Keith Stevens (Team Takeover Black)- It’s hard to argue with his success. His team is undefeated thus far and play the game with an unselfish style. They run their sets and commit on the defensive end of the ball.
Surprise Player: Noah Farrakhan (Playaz Basketball Club)- The Playaz always seem to have a 8th Grade guard take the Spotlight by storm and this kid might be the guy. He was spectacular during the Tip Off Classic and also came to play during the Clash For The Cup.
Surprise Team: Baltimore United Thrill- Yes they had some talent on paper but to put it together and be effective is something totally different. The made a final four run during the Tip Off Classic and lost in the championship of the Clash For The Cup.

Diary Of A Baller: Terrence "Big Smoove" Williams (Clinton, MD) Entry #7

Terrence And His Team Win Title

What's up Basketball Spotlight world!

This week I prepared for Made Hoops championship weekend, so Monday-Friday I did all basketball workouts. On Monday I went to Leslie for 2 hours right after school. On Tuesday we had TTO practice with our 7th grade to prepare for the upcoming weekend. On Wednesday I went to my trainer Shi and got a lot of shots up. On Thursday we got another practice in, but this time with just our 8th grade team. This practice was intense since we had to get ready for the weekend. On Friday I went to Shi again after school and got a lot of shots up so I would be prepared for the weekend. On Saturday, we drove to King of Prussia, PA.

Our first game was vs Team United (TU). We knew we would have to come to play because the first time we played them it went into OT, even though we had a comfortable lead late in the game. We won this game 61-45 and advanced to the semifinals vs NY Gauchos. After the TU game, we went out to eat, as a team, for my lil man Mike birthday. This was a great bonding time with my team before day 2 of Made Hoops championship weekend.

We had Gauchos early in the morning. They almost beat us in session 3 of Made Hoops because we took them lightly, so we knew we had to play hard or they would beat us. We came out sluggish but got it together later on in the first half. This game ended up going into OT but we won by one, 47-46.

Now the championship! We were coming into the championship 12-0 in Made Hoops play. We knew Playaz were going to give all they had to knock us off. We started off strong and ended the first half 15-33. In the second we kept the lead for a while but they would not go away. Off of some crucial late free throws, we ended up winning 60-55. It felt good winning Made Hoops championship especially because my team last year lost in the ship to CP3. We accomplished our goal of going through Made Hoops without losing a game. S/O to our 7th grade TTO too as they won the Future division a second time, going through both sessions undefeated.

This weekend I realized even more the importance of team play, which is the only way to win. We came together and fought through adversity, as a team. S/O to my brothers on and off the court. We came through. Now to get ready for the AAU season and 15U EYBL. I'll talk to you next week in my next diary.

Peace !

Justin Lewis and Jordan Toles Star At The Clash!

Justin Lewis and Jordan Toles

Baltimore United Thrill made a championship game run during the Clash For The Cup. Part of their success was the duo of Justin Lewis and Jordan Toles. Both players are known prospects and proved their worth at the Clash. This was Lewis last appearance with this club but Toles continues to run with the DMV group. Stay tuned as we bring you more top players from the Basketball Spotlight events.
