The Basketball Spotlight Winter Warz is in the books and we had a chance to gather some useful information for the event. This is what we learned from Winter Warz.
What Did We Learn From Winter Warz?
Team RIO National made their Basketball Spotlight season debut and dismantled the competition by mercy ruling every opponent. They are stacked with possibly the top 3 prospects in the region and have a supporting cast un-matched by any other squad. Their success is beginning to draw comparisons to other great Spotlight 8th Grade teams such as the “Supreme Team” (Team IZOD), “The MOBB” (DC Assault) and that loaded Team Scan squad aka 72 Dolphins. It’s obvious we can’t go back in time and have these matchups but talking about it is great.
When the season kicked off the Terror Squad predicted they would be the first team in Spotlight history to go through the Road To The Grand Finale without a loss. They were off to a remarkable 34-0 and two Spotlight titles before Elijah Everett’s Ralph Sampson type turn around ended their dreams in the semi-finals. Now the Basketball Spotlight streak survives one more year. Maybe next season another brave group will step up and crack the Spotvinci.
King Street Kings cracked our list at #6 because of their reputation and play as Team IZOD last season. After a dismal performance in their season debut at Clash For The Cup they were bounced from the Top 10. They then came to Winter Warz on a mission and left with victories over #3 PSA Cardinals and #1 Terror Squad while taking the title. KSK will definitely be back in our rankings when the new ones are released and should be there to stay.
The 6th Grade Division of the Spotlight circuit seems to be wide opened. We had three tournaments and had 6 different squads in the finals. Tip Off Classic (Glory and Team IZOD), Clash For The Cup (New World Unlimited and B’More Finest) and Winter Warz (Philly Triple Threat and Gauchos). Maybe by the DMV Jamboree we will have someone take charge of this grade level. We will keep you guys updated.
The 6th Annual J.E.M. All Star Classic will be returning in August and will once again commemorate the careers of the rising 9th Grade players. So far this year on the circuit we have seen some top players that will definitely land invites to this exclusive event. Stay tuned as we begin to let you know who the players are that earned invites.
