Diary Of A Baller: Marquise Walker (Chicago, IL) Entry #3

Marquise and His Teammates

Wassup its Marquise Walker with my diary.

On Monday I got to Kentucky and I went to the school and meet with Coach Breeze. He is my high school coach for South Warren HS. He introduced me into the school, and showed my dad and I what we had to do to get into the school. I had to get two shots (vaccinations) which did not hurt at all before being able to start school because each state is different. After that it was open gym with the high school players and I did good. I believe I will be doing great this season for the team and fit in nicely with the other players. Then I went to the Waffle House and went to bed.

The next day was my first day of school at South Warren Middle School. I was really nervous but if I be myself I'll be fine. Everyone at the school were really nice and they are really friendly. I love the way they just took me in and I got with the program so easy. Then after school we had practice and we worked hard. We focus a lot on defense right now. Practice this time of year isn't mandatory but all of our players come that aren't playing other sports. Official practice doesn't start until October 15th. The next day was the same as yesterday but I went to the football game that night which was really fun.

On Thursday I went to school, and after school we conditioned which was hard and I messed up my shin which is minor. Later that night I went to the high school soccer game which was packed. It was fun hanging out with the varsity and some of my classmates. I had a good time.

Then on Friday I went to the feast which was fun. This was a fall festival at the elementary school. I went through the haunted house with my friends and we loved it. I even saw some of my friends trying to scare me.

On Saturday one of my teammates, Day Day Gumm and I went to Western Kentucky to scrimmage against the college players. We did good but it was hard adjusting to the game. They were way bigger and stronger than I or Day Day was. Even though they were 6-8 years older than me I still scored and dropped dimes and handled the ball very well.

Afterwards we went outside and chilled for a little bit then a couple more teammates came over, Jackson and Cam and we hung out with them. Mike showed up and he let me drive his car in the subdivision, I was so nervous. I showed him I can drive pretty well for my age and I did really good. Sunday I went to Church and gave God a big Thank you for everything he has been doing for me lately. I would not be here if it wasn’t for him. Then I got home chilled for a while and got ready for our open gym. I did pretty well and got the ball to my teammates. Then I got home talked to my dad then my mom and did this diary and went to sleep...............

See You Guys Nest Week!

World Alert Code Red: "The Terror Squad" Is Coming!

"Terror Squad" Preseason #1 7th Grade Team In America

In the past few years the Basketball Spotlight Road To The Grand Finale circuit has produced some of the top teams in the country. In 2011 Team Scan AKA “72 Dolphins” and DC Assault AKA “The MOBB” both flexed their muscles while making final four runs. In 2012 Team IZOD AKA “Supreme Team” was introduced to the world and showed pure dominance for two seasons by making consecutive final four runs and national championship game appearances. This past season Team Takeover AKA TTO 7th Grade team was impressive and made a final four run. But our latest edition might top all of these squads.

Hailing from the DMV area we would like to introduce Slam City Elite AKA “The Terror Squad”. Yes we feel the name fits this squad because their loaded roster will send chills down your spine. They have some of the top players in the country at every position and should be the overall favorite for the Spotlight Grand Finale crown and the AAU 7th Grade National Championship. No team in Spotlight history has been able to travel our circuit without any loses. But “The Terror Squad” seems to be up for the task. Their skipper Mr. Francis feels they are ready, “One of our goals is not to only win the Grand Finale but get through the Spotlight circuit undefeated. We love making history” he finished.

Meet The Players

Terrence Williams Forward:
Williams jumps into the Class of 2020 as one of the best players walking. His play last season earned him Basketball Spotlight Most Outstanding Player for the Class of 2019. His combined power and skill might be unmatched on this level. He should be a double/double machine.

Tyler Brelsford Guard:
Another returnee from the TTO final four run last season. Brelsford is a proven winner but his hand has never been this loaded. This kid knows the game and loves the share the rock. On this squad he has options galore so his assist per game are sure to go up.
Jordan Toles Guard:
Last season Toles was virtually a one man army. Now with the Terror Squad he can play to his strengths which include running the floor, finishing off plays and showing great athleticism. He gives TTS a certified wing threat on both sides of the ball and simply one of the top players in America. He could have a breakout year nationally.
AJ Hoggard Guard:
Hoggard dropping into this class has frighten some opponents. They now have to devise a plan to slow down this big guard. It’s Hoggard’s job to play alongside Brelsford and make sure these horses are fed. I like his court vision when passing the ball and his size when scoring the rock.
Cameron Byers Forward:
Byers was a strong rebounding machine who can also score close to the cup. He gives TTS an intimidating force inside especially on the defensive end. If he plays the aggressive role the entire season he could help them make the improbable run.
Ryan Conway Guard:
Conway showed he could get things done at the Future Phenom Camp. He’s a multi-purpose guard that uses his strength to impact the game. On TTS Conway might be relied on to be instant offense off the bench and guard one of the top scorers from the other team.

Austin Allison Guard:
Allison is the hired gun and zone stretcher. Most teams will probably fall back into some type of zone against TTS and Allison should make them pay. He will be counted on to keep the defense honest. If he gets hot early opponents will be in for a long day.

Isaiah Todd Forward:
Todd’s 6’6 and his best days of basketball are ahead of him. He rebounds, blocks shots and runs the floor well. He will make it very difficult for opponents to score or get second chance points. His presence alone helps them present the top frontline in the United States.
Demon Clowney Forward:
Standing 6’4 Clowney is the muscle for TTS. He will hit the glass like a mad man and doesn’t care about scoring the pill. His focus is playing hard and clearing out space for potential scorers.

Montez McNeil Forward:
Just when you thought things couldn’t get worse you throw in McNeil. Montez is an inside scoring machine with a big frame. Last season he was a load to handle on the 6th Grade level. Now with these other pieces around him he could be even more dangerous.

We got a chance to talk to Jaden and here’s what he had to say.

My Future Phenom Camp Experience Feat: Tyler Brelsford (Maryland)

Tyler Brelsford entered the Future Phenom Camp with a target on his back. Many opponents wanted to match up with the Maryland point guard to gain notoriety for taking him off the throne. Brelsford stood tall and finished as one of the Top 5 players in the camp and best playmaker or passer award. We got a chance to sit down with the floor general and here’s what he had to say.

BS: How did you like the drill session?
ZH: It was great because we learned a lot of new things but also competitive. It gave us a chance to really get at it.

BS: Who was the best player you faced at the Future Phenom Camp?
ZH: I would say AJ Hoggard because this was his first time playing in our age group and he was dominant. He showed that his basketball IQ is on a very high level.

BS: What was your favorite aspect of the camp?
ZH: The games, especially playing with Jaden Springer. I loved just feeding him the ball and watching him go to work. I enjoyed that a lot.

BS: How does the Future Phenom Camp stack up against other camps you have attended?
ZH: It’s right up there, it had the talent, competition and good drills. Also it was close to home so my family and friends were able to watch me play.

Diary Of A Baller: Marquise Walker (Chicago, Illinois) Entry #2

Marquise Walker (Chicago, Ill)

Hi, it’s Marquise Walker again with my weekly diary.

Monday, my father gave me the day off from my workouts after a long weekend so I used that time to get extra sleep.

Tuesday, I woke up at 6:00 am and got my workout and running in. Today I saw a video of myself on middleschoolhoops.com making a nice pass to Balsa Koprivica for a dunk. He’s a great big man. I went back to St. Joseph HS to play open gym this week. I made some adjustments and played a lot better. I feel more comfortable with the speed of the game at the varsity level now.

Wednesday, I woke up and worked out again today. When I got to school I learned that my friends found out I would be leaving next week to transfer to a school in Kentucky. If you don't already know, I'm transferring to South Warren Middle School in Bowling Green, KY. I'm in 8th grade but I'm going to be the starting PG on the South Warren HS varsity basketball team. It’s sad to leave my close friends behind but i have to do what i have to do. When I got home from school I was able to see the report Clark Francis wrote about me from last weekend’s camp. I have to say it was really good and he thinks I'm a great player. He say's I'm better than where he has me ranked (#24).

Thursday, as usual I woke up at 6:00 am and worked out. This is very hard some mornings. Don't get me wrong I want to be great but days like this I just don't feel like working out. School was pretty normal today except for people wishing me luck in Kentucky. I went to the open gym at St. Joseph today. I matched up a lot with top 100 PG Glyn Watson (Nebraska). I thought I did a lot better. My dad told me that your moves can work on anybody and that gave me the confidence to try them on Glyn. I hit a long jumper on him, I scored on him on the fast break, and on one play I used my moves and beat him off the dribble pretty good. I also stole the ball from him on one occasion. I messed up some too. Glyn is a great player and he constantly talked to me about how i could be a better player as well as the some of the other coaches on St. Joseph. I also met the head coach from DePaul University. His name is Oliver Purnell.

Friday, I worked out at 6am and headed to school. This is my last day before I leave for good. I’m' going to miss my friends and they let me know they feel the same way. I went to a HS football game at Proviso West High School with my best friend Kayla. She's a freshman at West. It was fun at the game and really loud. Kayla and I had a great time.

Saturday, the whole family went out to the movies. My mom, dad, and my younger brother and sisters. I saw Maze Runner. We took my little sisters to Chuckie Cheese and I chased them around and helped them play their games. We got home and had some Chicago deep dish pizza form Giordanos. Afterwards, I began to prepare for my trip by washing all my clothes in the basement but the video game is down there so I washed and played 2k with my dad and brother for the rest of the day.

Sunday, I woke up and worked out again. I finished laundry and went to church today. I spent my last day in Chicago on the Westside with all my cousins, aunts, and uncles.

See you next week

My Future Phenom Camp Experience Feat. Trey Patterson (New Jersey)

Trey Patterson used the Future Phenom Camp to make his debut into the Class of 2021. During the camp the 6’3 prospect showed an array of skills and potential. We got a chance to sit down with the Garden State baller and here’s what he had to say.

My Future Phenom Camp Experience Feat. Trey Patterson

BS: What was your mindset entering the Future Phenom Camp?
TP: Well I was excited to be playing against my new class and I wanted to prove that I was the best player in the country.

BS: How did you like the drill session?
TP: I loved the drill session because I was able to learn a lot and the drills were very competitive especially the one on one drill.

BS: Who would you say was the best player you faced at the Future Phenom Camp?
TP: It had to be Zion Harmon. He’s currently ranked as the top 6th grader in the country so I was happy to have a chance to play against him. He’s a very good guard.

BS: What was your favorite aspect of the camp?
TP: The games because we got a chance to play against some of the best players in the country. There was a lot of competition and talent at this camp.

What Did We Learn At The Future Phenom Camp?

The Basketball Spotlight Future Phenom Camp is in the books and what an event it was. There were some many memorable moments but we decided to pull out some interesting facts from the event. Here’s what we learned at the Future Phenom Camp In Maryland.

What Did We Learn At Future Phenom Camp?

Huge Numbers For First Time Out!

After two months of planning the Basketball Spotlight Future Phenom Camp was unveiled in District Heights, Maryland. The camp featured 252 players from 22 different states including District Of Columbia and Canada. The players participated in drills before getting down to business. I love the format and intensity of the games. But I also know that we have some work to do to make things better for next year. Overall it was a great learning experience for our first time out.

Class Of 2019 Was Stacked!

One of the toughest jobs was picking the Top 20 Game for the Class Of 2019. This group of players featured national names Markquis Walker, Jeremiah Francis Korpin Spencer and Anthony Johnson. The local scene produced big time guard Justin Moore, The Mitchell Twins, Che Evans and Christian Depollar to name a few. Their games were very competitive and fun to watch. It’s going to be sad to see these guys go.

North Carolina Is Loaded With Youngsters!

One thing for is certain is that the state of North Carolina represented themselves well at the Future Phenom Camp. We all knew about national phenom Jaden Springer but I was happily introduced to 2020 studs Tristan Maxwell, Jalen Cone and Jordan McPhatter. They also have others coming down the pike including Class Of 2022 guards Jacob Newman, Keyon Webb and Justin Monden. The future definitely looks bright in the Tar Heel State.

Reclass In Full Effect!

The Future Phenom Camp was the stage for many players announcing their reclassifications. Some of the top players including Anthony Johnson, Marvin Price, AJ Hoggard, Cameron Byers, Tyler Brelsford and Trey Patterson to name a few played with their new class. All of these youngsters showed dominance and were elected to the Top 20 All Star Games. Most of these guys also have a chance to be ranked very high in their national classes.

Baby Ballers Return!

A few years ago Basketball Spotlight specialized in bringing you the top baby ballers. Since then we kind of shied away from watching youngsters that young but the Future Phenom Camp made us want to return. The likes Khoi Thurmond, Tyrin Bizzelle, Samartine Bogues and Cameron Gillus made my eyes twinkle. I can’t wait to see these youngsters make their way up the ranks.

Fresh Faces!

The naysayers of Basketball Spotlight sometime state that we only write about the same players but a few youngsters proved them wrong as they used the Future Phenom Camp to introduce themselves to the Basketball Spotlight world. Players that were new on the scene and impressed included Trey Thomas, Keyshawn Johnson, Cameron Byers, Isaiah Moseley, Grant Ott Large and Eric Dixon.

Trenton Catholic Academy (The Home Of Champions)

Trenton Catholic Academy is unique, serving as the Regional Pre K-12 school for the Diocese of Trenton. Housed in one large building on a beautiful, suburban 64 acre campus, the Lower School educates grades PreK-8, and the Upper School is 9-12. Built in 1962 as St. Anthony High School, it was eventually renamed McCorristin Catholic. In 2005, the Diocese consolidated several area parochial grade schools into the building to create Trenton Catholic Academy.

Small by design, TCA faculty can provide the necessary attention to enable the culturally and academically diverse student population to thrive. Academics are the primary focus, and students are also encouraged to participate in some of the various extracurricular activities.

TCA offers an array of high school athletics: B&G soccer, cheerleading, B&G basketball, B&G track & field, baseball and softball. The school has a long, storied history in basketball, although the soccer and track programs have produced team and individual champions over the last few years. The TCA boys basketball program fields teams at the Freshman, JV and varsity levels.

Since 2005, TCA has won numerous league, county, sectional and state basketball titles. In 2010, the TCA boys team won the New Jersey Tournament of Champions. Not to be outdone, the girls team won the TOC the following year. Both teams play grueling schedules to prepare for the postseason tournaments.

TCA never loses sight on priorities for its student/athletes, as it does an excellent job on preparation for life beyond high school. The last 18 basketball player/graduates have gone on to college, 15 of whom played for the school team (see listing).
Dondre Whitmore, Bloomfield Univ.
Frantz Massenat, Drexel Univ.
Markese Tucker, St. Peter’s Univ.
Khalid Lewis, U. Delaware/LaSalle
Charles Cooke, James Madison/Dayton Univ.
Tennyson Lewis, The College of NJ
Reggie Coleman, Neumann Univ.
Mel Weldon, Neumann Univ.
Chazz Patterson, St. Peter’s Univ.
Chance Patterson, St. Peter’s Univ.
Chris Lewis, Delaware State Univ.
Nate King, Virginia Union Univ.
Brandon Taylor, Penn State Univ.
Khalil Batie, Rutgers Univ.
Eric Bowman, Neumann Univ.

In addition, the TCA Lower School boys basketball teams have dominated the CYO leagues for years, with many of those players transitioning to the Upper School for high school. TCA routinely graduates 100% of its seniors, with nearly all continuing their education in college. The Class of 2014 averaged nearly $90,000 per graduate in offered scholarship and grant monies.

Diary Of A Baller: Marquise Walker (Chicago, Illinois) Entry #1

Marquise Walker and Clark Francis

Hello everybody, my name is Marquise Walker. I'm a 5'9 PG from Chicago, IL and I'm very funny.

I went to BBall Spotlight camp in Washington, D.C. a couple of weeks ago. It was a great experience and a lot of competition. I got to play against one of my good friends, PG Jeremiah Francis from Columbus, OH. I love playing against him because he makes me better every time we play. I made the All-Star team at spotlight camp and I put in work at the All-Star game. I finished the camp rated in the top 5. The very next was the John Lucas camp in Chicago and my friend Jeremiah Francis was there also. Since I live in Chicago, I took Jeremiah to a party with me after the camp on Sunday and his dad and my dad went to a party for grownups. Jeremiah is a fun dude even though he acts shy around everybody else. Sunday when I woke up for camp I gave thanks to GOD for everything because it was his day. Then went on and competed on the last day of the John Lucas camp. Clark Francis gave me a critical write up based on my play at the camp. I believe he was right because I didn't play my best that weekend.

The following week I worked harder than ever to prepare for the next camp (Buckeye Prep). I wake up before school at 6am 4 days a week and run, do pushups and sit-ups, and jump rope. I was determined to change Clark Francis's mind about me. In addition to the hard work, I went to open gym at St. Joseph H.S. This school is famous from the movie Hoop Dreams and because Isaiah Thomas went to school there. I competed against Glyn Watson who is a nationally rated senior PG who just committed to Nebraska. I struggled against the varsity guys but I will adjust and keep getting better.

I got to camp Saturday and I saw Clark Francis and thought to myself, don't prove nothing just play your game. The showcase before camp was loaded with top players like Myles Pierre, Bryan Sanders, Shariff Kenny, the Langley twins, Wendell Moore, and my friend Jeremiah Francis. We lost the game but I got the MVP for my team. For my play during the camp I made the all-star game after playing all those games in 2 days I was tired. That's when I realized all the running, pushups and sit-ups I do every morning was paying off. It was show time. In the beginning of the game I was doing crazy stuff but I hit a 3 and got two nice dimes in a row and got going. I dominated the game in the second half and I got top 5 player at the camp. Clark Francis watched the whole game and I think he left camp with a better taste in his mouth about me. I think I proved to him I was a great player.

See You Guys Next Week,
Marquise Walker

Basketball Spotlight Future Phenom Camp Class of 2023-2024 Top Performers Part 2

Samartine "Fat-Man" Bogues (Maryland)

The Basketball Spotlight Future Phenom Camp featured some of the top baby ballers in the country for the Class of 2023 and 2024. Here’s Part 2 of our top performers from that weekend.
Future Phenom Camp Class of 2023-2024 Top Performers Part 2

Samartine Bogues Guard (Maryland)- Nicknamed Fat-Man Bogues is a born leader and play maker. He directs the traffic on the floor while breaking down the defense and making plays. He came into this event with a national name and showed why on the floor. He‘s  natural point guard that gets anywhere he wants on the floor. He has the knack of either scoring or dishing the pill.

Jakhary Towns Guard (Michigan)- The kid with the big name from Grand Rapids was eager for the East Coast Challenge. He brings smoothness to the stage and picks his spots nicely. At times he can defer a little too much which could also be a good trait for a future point guard.

Tyrik Petway Guard (Florida)- Playing with the older age group didn’t stop Petway from getting buckets. This kid from the sunshine state surely knows how to find the bottom of the hole. He gives it to you from the perimeter at finishing in the lane. He was the 3rd leading scorer in the camp.

Curtis Staie Guard (New York)- Don’t let the innocent face fool you this kid will bite your heart out. I like his confidence on the floor and willingness to attack defenders off the dribble. He can stick the jumper but also drive past you to the cup.

Daniel Dormu Guard (Maryland)- Dormu is a veteran on the floor at this age. His big game experience showed at this camp has he played with a good poise and tempo. He’s capable of playing wither guard spot and will sacrifice his body on the defensive end.

Jaden Cozie Guard (Pennsylvania)- A tough point guard from the City of Brotherly Love with a great drive, draw and dish game. He makes it his business to get into the lane and spoon feed teammates. He has the ability to read the defense like a book.

John Mobley Guard (Ohio)- The Showman from the Midwest had his moments at the Future Phenom Camp. At an early age he understands that his court vision might be his ticket for a free education. I love his willingness to share the ball as he dribbles through defenders.
