Basketball Spotlight Headed South In March!

In the month of March Basketball Spotlight will be heading south for two big events. Our first stop will be in Greensboro, NC for the Carolina Preps Invitational and the next weekend we will be headed to Atlanta for the Georgia United Tip Off Classic.

The Carolina Preps Invitational has the #1 team in the Class of 2019 headlines this card. We expect some heavy teams from throughout the country to come and take a shot at this crew. Basketball Spotlight will be in the building to bring you wall to wall coverage. Attention concession stand, make sure you have that slaw ready.

The Georgia United Tip Off Classic of course features the #1 8th grade team in the land but also will be bringing in the We All Can Go All Stars, Kentucky Gators, ATR Explosion, NC Runnin Rebels and a host of others. We cannot wait to get down to the Georgia Peach State for this action.

Chase Adams Proves There Are Good Things In Small Packages!

Regardless of where anyone has Chase Adams of Chicago, Ill. ranked, few can argue about the kid’s effectiveness. I’ve been covering hoops for years now and I really can’t remember seeing a guard this small on the 8th Grade level but yet so dominate. His handle is sizzling and his court vision is uncanny. I’ve always leaned towards size when it comes to my rankings but this kid is amazing at what he does. IJS

Basketball Spotlight Highlights: Taylor Commands Attention At The Clash!

Atiba Taylor (Team IZOD)

Much has been written about Taylor and his ability to play the point. During the Clash For The Cup he proved he was worth the billing after quarterbacking the “Supreme Team” to the championship. Check out his highlights and remember where you saw it at first. Basketball Spotlight, the nations #1 leader in tournaments and event coverage. Stay tuned as we bring you more highlights and profiles from top players. Next week we will check out how he performed at the MIT.

Diary Of A Baller: Ja'Quaye James (Englewood, NJ) Entry #1 (Video Highlights)

Young Ja'Quaye and Uncle Juelz Santana

Basketball Spotlight is now of its third Diary of A Ball for the 2013-14 season. Introducing Ja’quaye James from Englewood, NJ.

Hello Basketball World,

Yes, Juelz Santana is my uncle. Yes, I was the little boy in all the videos. Yes, I was on the “What The Games Been Missing" album and yes I used to rap and model but that was in the past.

This week went well for me, it was my birthday on February 15th then my uncle JuJu (Juelz) birthday on February 18th and we spent time together. We went out to eat with the family and had a bunch of laughs and a lot of food and a good time watching the all-star weekend festivities. Now it's time to let you'll know who I am and how my life changed for the better in the basketball world. Yes, this is my dream!

I'm Ja'Quaye James and my basketball journey started with the Gauchos, it was a good team, but the coaches felt they had better options than me, so therefore I moved on to the L.I. Lightning. The Lightning helped me figure out and define my game. Things were good for about a year then the high school program took over and snatched my two friends John Severe (Fordham)and Dayshon Smith. When they left I knew it was time for me to go. Next, I bounced back and forth from the Rens and Milbank. Both were good programs but I still needed to find the right home. Now I am PlayazFAM…4Life. I finally found a team and a place that I can call home and I love it here, “no chuck” this is real facts.

I grew up uptown on 164th street; this is where I got my toughness from. I played in the Pit and the Battle Grounds playgrounds with all the older guys. I always felt that if I can play here I can play anywhere. Now I play with a certain mindset every-time I'm on those basketball courts. This comes from getting told I'm too small or not strong enough or not fast enough. This made me battle tested at a young age. Now on the court I'm fearless and I'm always comfortable like I been there before. I think this type of chip on my shoulder is helping me out for the best. At the end of the day I was honored when Mike Melton asked me to do the diary and let you all into my life. I want to give you the real me on and off the court. I like to do a lot of other things besides a basketball, like playing video games, riding my 4 wheeler, and just chill with my friends. But I have no friends on the court. If you have that other jersey on, its war! LOL.. Ask Jahvon Quinerly, he is one of my good friends off the court but on the floor it’s a different story.

Once again this is Ja'Quaye James and I'm signing off aka Young Jelly Fam aka @jf_g3 Mr. 12 on IG LOL, nah I'm just playing. But I'm signing off, catch you'll next week. Ja'Quaye James best point guard in class hands down. Men lie women lie numbers don't. Facts of life.

Basketball Spotlight Player Highlights: It's Show Time!

Scottie "The Show" Lewis

We gave Scottie Lewis the nickname of “The Show” and he lived up to his billing at the Clash For The Cup. The shooting guard gave us a glimpse of all his tools while helping his 7th Grade team reach the championship round of the 8th Grade Blue Division. Some scouts have him ranked in the Top 5 of the Class of 2019 and I can’t disagree but I must admit that he might have an argument for the #1 spot.

Basketball Spotlight Highlights: Toatley Shows Breakdown Moves!

Donovan Toatley (Team Takeover)

Donovan Toatley has always been known for his ball handling and finishing. During the Clash For The Cup he stripped another point guard and finished the play off with flair. Toatley runs the show for the Team Takeover 8th Grade crew and will be ready to rock at the DMV Takeover.

Basketball Spotlight Player Highlights: Clark Proving His Point At The Clash!

Aaron Clarke (Team Scan)

The development of Aaron Clarke has been a hot topic this season and he showed prowess during the Clash For The Cup. He carried a full load while being the primary ball handler and perimeter scorer. We will keep you posted on Clarke’s progress as he gets ready for the high school level.

Introducing Skylar Williams (South Carolina)

Skylar Williams showed his great court vision at the 2013 CP3 Rising Stars Camp. The Class of 2018 point guard created for his teammates and stroked the ball from deep. Skylar is one of South Carolina's top 8th graders. Video appears courtesy of Ty Kish and Middle School Hoops.

Basketball Spotlight 6th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

The 6th Grade Top 10 Rankings have a couple of new members after the Clash For The Cup. Here are the Top 10 6th Grade Teams in the region.

Basketball Spotlight 6th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

1. Team IZOD: Team IZOD returns to the #1 spot after winning the Clash For The Cup. They will represent NJ at the DMV Takeover.

2. Gauchos: We haven’t seen the Choz since the Tip Off Classic. We know they have a loaded roster and are tough to beat. Hopefully we will see them soon.

3. Team Glory: TG will let us see what they are working with once we travel down for the DMV Takeover. You can’t ever count this team out.

4. Team Takeover (Wright): They made their presence felt at the Clash For The Cup before losing in the finals. They will have another shot at it during the DMV Takeover.

5. Hilltoppers Heat: These boys brought the fire as they advanced to the final four of the Clash. They are also headed to the AC Showcase.

6. Team DEMI: A late entry caused them to miss out on the Clash so I imagine that we will see them at the AC Showcase.

7. New Heights: MH jumped on the scene at the Clash and charged all the way to the final four. They were a pleasant surprise in the field.

8. Milbank: We thought we would see “The Bank” at the Clash but hopefully we will watch them at the AC Showcase.

9. On Point Rens: We can’t wait to see this scrappy bunch again. Most likely they will head back down during the Memorial Day Classic.

10. Team Scan: TS has already said they will be present for the AC Showcase. This will give them a chance to chase that banner.

Basketball Spotlight 7th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

The 7th Grade Top 10 didn’t have that much movement as many of the teams stayed on course. Here are the Top 10 7th Grade teams in the region.

Basketball Spotlight 7th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

1. Team RIO National: RIO made it to the finals of the Clash For The Cup 8th Grade Blue Division. They showed some toughness by knocking off a few blue collar squads on the way.

2. Rens: Rens move up to the #2 after winning the Clash For The Cup. They seem to be on the heels of Team RIO and another matchup is imminent.

3. Team Takeover: This group still hasn’t cured their Spotlight jinx after falling in the finals of the Clash. Maybe they will be able to shake it off and win the DMX Takeover on their home turf.

4. 6th Man Warriors: The Warriors made a strong run to the semifinals before losing to rival Team Takeover. They might have a chance to meet up again when we head to Maryland.

5. Metro Flyers: MF rebounded at the Clash and made a strong semifinal run. They seem ready to return to the standard they set last year.

6. Team Nelson: TN still isn't clicking on all cylinders yet. They’re still trying to fill the void left by the departure of Player Of The Year Mikeal Jones.

7. CIA Bounce: After a controversial pool play loss CIA Bounce ran into a determined Rens team and lost in the quarterfinals.

 8. Team Final: TF showed they belonged with the big boys at the Clash. I’m excited to see what they bring to the table for the DMV Takeover

9. Gauchos: The Choz were absent from the Clash but we expect them to return for the AC Showcase. They have a very scrappy bunch.

10. MJ Mavericks: The Mavs round our Top 10 after a quarterfinal run at the Clash.

Basketball Spotlight 8th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

The 8th Grade Top had little movement as most of the teams held down their end of the bargain during the Clash For The Cup. Here’s the Top 10 8th Grade teams in the region.

Basketball Spotlight 8th Grade Top 10 Presented By AGame Team Apparel

1. Team IZOD: The #1 team in the region held on to their spot after running through the Clash For The Cup. They seem primed to make another deep run for a national title.

2. Playaz: The Playaz proved to have the grit to grind out wins and while making it to the finals of the Clash For The Cup. They have enough weapons to overtake IZOD and win the Grand Finale title.

3. Team Takeover: TT made a final four run during the Clash For The Cup. They had enough pieces to get things done but fell a little short. They are one of the favorites for the DMV Takeover.

4. Rens: The Rens jump up a spot after making it to the final four of the Clash For The Cup. They are a very sneaky team that you must keep your eye on.

5. Team Scan: TS had a decent showing the Clash especially with an upset victory over #2 Playaz. They haven’t turned the corner yet of becoming a dominate team in the region.

6. Team Final: TF fell down a few slots after not having a good showing at the Clash. I’m waiting to see how they respond at the DMV Takeover.

7. Maryland Scholars: The Scholars were absent from the Clash but will definitely be present at the DMV Takeover. It should be very interesting to see them tangle.

8. Team Twelve: The Brooklyn team moved up two slots after making it to the quarterfinals of the Clash. They also will be making the trip to Maryland for the DMV Takeover.

9. SHA Elite: Mergin Sina’s bunch was not at the Clash but we do expect to see them at the AC Showcase and the MDC.

10. Gym Rats (Syracuse): These boys play the Clash impressed us enough to throw them into the Top 10. Now at the DMV they must prove they belong.

Best Of The Clash For The Cup Part 2 (The Players)

The Clash For The Cup highlights Part 1 gave us a quick glimpse of some of the top plays therefore for Part 2 we decided to focus on the players. This clip shows some of the top performers from the Clash and it’s indeed a dandy. Once again we would like to thank all of the programs, players and parents for supporting our events. We will do our best to continue to bring you the best events and coverage in the country. Our next stop is the DMV Takeover March 8th and 9th.

Diary Of A Baller: Atiba Taylor (Hacksensack, NJ) Final Entry

Atiba Taylor Jr. (Student/Athlete)

What’s up this is Atiba Taylor Jr. reporting back with my FINAL Diary Of A Baller entry.

Monday there was no school again due to another snowstorm. I mean at this point all this snow is just ridiculous; I’d rather just go to school…LOL. I was supposed to have a basketball workout that night but it was canceled because of the weather, so instead I was outside shoveling snow; which I hate. Once I was done, I worked out in the house and got myself ready for school.

Tuesday was a regular day at school, nothing special just work. After school I was suppose to have another basketball workout later that night but it never happened. We drove all the way to Jersey City to find out some guys had rented the gym for the evening so we couldn’t use it, so I ended up working out back at my house.

Wednesday after school my Dad and I went to my gym to put up shots. After struggling with my shot and free throws last tournament, that’s all we worked on. I put up 150 free throws but only made 103. Then I shot 300 game time shots but made only 172. I’m sure people think it’s easy to make a certain amount of made shots but it’s not. Adjusting your shot takes time and a lot of practice; good results definitely don’t come easy

Thursday was another snow day so basically I did the same thing I did Monday, a whole bunch of nothing LOL. My team was suppose to practice that night so we could get ready for the M.I.T. Tournament this weekend but our practice was canceled because of the snow once again. Seems like I can’t get any basketball work in because of all this snow so I just worked out in the house again.

Friday morning my school had a two-hour delay because of the snow so I didn’t have to be at school till 10am. We were supposed to leave for the M.I.T right after school but the tournament got moved to the following weekend due to the consistent snowfall. This obviously has been a terrible week for basketball LOL.

Saturday my team didn’t practice and since we’re not going to the M.I.T. this weekend because of the snow I was able to attend my friend Sweet 16 party that I was invited too. I went to the mall to get her a gift and then I was off to the party. The party was real cool. I finally got a chance to do something outside of basketball. For once, I was able to just chill and hang out with my friends.

Sunday…guess what?! My team had practice but it got canceled again because of the snow and ice…LOL. I really hate snow!!! Now this is crazy; a full week of no basketball and it is killing me. This is definitely not the way I wanted to finish off my basketball diary but Mother Nature had other plans I guess. I did watch The NBA All Star game though and that wasn’t even that fun to watch. Their uniforms were ugly and the game was kind of boring to me. Kyrie and Blake G. was the most exciting to watch but that’s about it. After the game I watched the movie 300 with my family then I went to bed.

I would like to thank Mike Melton and the BBSpotlight staff for giving me this platform to share my story with the world. I’ve been playing in Spotlight events since the 3rd grade I appreciate you guys for exposing my talent nationally, and always bringing the best talent to New Jersey to compete. Since I’ve been playing I won the Grand Finale Championship in the 4th grade with The NY Gauchos, 6th grade with KSK, 7th grade with Team Izod, and we will win The Grand Finale championship again this year too. BBallSpotlight is definitely one of the best nationally known tournaments to play in hands down. I also want to thank my basketball organization Team Izod Sports-U for allowing us to compete in Spotlight events and my teammates as well because without them I would have this opportunity. Soon I will be announcing where I will spend my next 4 years of high school at and Basketball Spotlight will be the first to announce it. Thank You Everybody!!!!!

P.S.A. WE ALL CAN GO ALL-STARS (WACG) STOP BEING SCARED AND COME TO THE BBALLSPOTLIGHT ATLANTIC CITY SHOWCASE!!!!! #COMEGETTHISWORK

Basketball Spotlight would like to thank Atiba Taylor Jr. and his family for letting us inside their lives the last 12 weeks. We wish him luck in high school and beyond. Our next stop we will travel to the Big Apple and check in on point guard Ja'Quaye James of the Playaz Basketball Club which should be interesting.

Best Of The Clash For The Cup Mixtape Part 1

As our coverage continues of the Clash For The Cup. We have the video highlights Part 1. Check some of the top talent that was in the building for this hot event. Stay tuned because we also have Part 2 coming your way. We will continue to do our best in bringing you the hottest events and coverage in the country.

What Did We Learn At The Clash For The Cup?

The Clash For The Cup is in the books and it was a great event. He also gave us the chance to learn a few things about our circuit.

What Did We Learn At The Clash For The Cup?

Director’s In The Spotlight!
A few years ago many big time team directors paid little attention to the middle school basketball movement. Now things have changed and it was evident at the Clash For The Cup. Some directors of a few top programs in the country not only showed their face but actually coached their 8th Grade teams. Those directors included Terrance “Munch” Williams (Team Scan), Dana Dingle (NY Lightning), Keith Stevens (Team Takeover) and Ed Bright & Brian Coleman (Team IZOD). This is just an example of how we are growing and helping middle school basketball reach new levels.

The Quinerly Factor!
It seems whatever team Jahvon Quinerly rocks on ends up taking the picture with the banner on Sunday. At the Clash he returned to Team IZOD and helped them capture the banner. He didn’t score a bunch of points but just his presence on the floor opens up opportunities for others. He’s definitely a major force on the 8th Grade level and a winner.

Rens Call Out Team RIO!
After the Rens won the 7th Grade Division the scene turned into a post-fight press conference as their coach immediately said they wanted a shot at Team RIO. These two squads had a heated battle during the Tip Off Classic and in the Clash Team RIO decided to play in a different division. Now I guess the table is set for them to do battle in the near future.

The Mailman is making his move!
Yes after watching the Clash I know we will have 1 or 2 stamps going out this season. We haven’t given “The Stamp” in a while so these youngsters must be very deserving. Keep an eye out because these announcements should be coming very soon.

Best Playmaker: Joel Brown (CIA Bounce) Brown knows how to make a play for himself or his teammate. His court vision is unique and his feel for the game stands out.

Clash For The Cup 8th Grade Best Of The Best & Super 10 Rankings

Nazi Reid Finishes As Best Prospect

The Basketball Spotlight Clash For The Cup is in the books and it gave us some memorable moments. Now we will give you the Best Of The Best that we saw in Neptune.

Clash For The Cup Best Of The Best 8th Grade

Best Prospect: Nazi Reid (Team IZOD)
This statement has been repeated many times and Reid held it down once again. When the 6’7 prodigy turns on his motor he makes many scouts, high school coaches and maybe some college skippers salivate. If this kid continues to work hard and keep a humble mind the sky is the limit.

Best Floor General: Ja’Quaye James (Playaz)
James gets the nod after directing the Playaz back to the championship round. You can’t put a price on how much he impacts the game. He does whatever he teams needs to get the job done. NY has another pg they can add to the legendary blog roll.

Best Shooter: Will Engelhart (Gym Rats)
Will shoots the lights out and isn’t afraid of letting it go from deep. He instantly gave the Syracuse squad a weapon from behind the arc. He believes every shot he lets go will be going in.

Best Performance: Walter Talley vs. Playaz
Talley blacked out in the second half and helped Team Scan advance out of pool play. He was relentless when attacking the basket and just seemed to have everything falling.

Best Athlete: Scottie Lewis (Team RIO)
Besides dunking Lewis does some many other athletic things. He block shots, pushes the rock and even dives on the floor in pursuit. He’s one of the best athletes to come through our circuit.

Best Defender: Luther Muhammad (Team IZOD)
This kid terrorized ball handlers all weekend and let them know about it. He really takes pride in his defense which is very rare nowadays. He causes most point guards to throw the rock to a teammate instead of facing his heat.

Best Scorer: Jalen Carey (Rens)
I must say the NY youngster black out in two of the games which helped Rens reach the final four. He has a smooth game and showed the he can take to the next level in terms of putting the ball in the hole.

Best Kept Secret: Gym Rats (Syracuse)
The victory over 6th Man Warriors and causing the Rens to make a historic comeback proves that this team can lace them up against any team on the circuit. They are a stubborn crew that you can’t take for granted.

Super 10 Performers Ranking
1. Nazi Reid (Team IZOD)
2. Ja’Quaye James (Playaz)
3. Luther Muhammad (Team IZOD)
4. Brandon Slater (Team Takeover)
5. Jalen Carey (Rens)
6. Walter Talley (Team Scan)
7. Justin Winston (Playaz)
8. Atiba Taylor (Team IZOD)
9. Scottie Lewis (Team RIO)

Clash For The Cup 6th Grade Top Performers

Niels Lane (Team IZOD)

The 6th Grade Division of the Clash For The Cup gave us a look at the up and coming talent. Here are the top performers that came to play down at Hoop Group Headquarters.

Clash For The Cup 6th Grade Top Performers

Niels Lane Guard (Team IZOD)- Lane has been known as a scorer for his short time on the Spotlight circuit and this weekend was no difference. He averaged near 14 points a game with his best out puts coming against Team Final and Jersey Phoenix. This squad counts on him to get things done and he delivered.

Zion Bethea Guard (Team IZOD)- The big guard added to IZOD’s scoring punch in this event. He hit up Jersey Phoenix for 20 markers and also went to work against state rival Hilltoppers Heat for 16 points. When he’s on Team IZOD excels even more.

Richie Greaves Guard (Team IZOD)- With all these weapons around him Greaves’s job is to run the show and dish the rock. This point guard does his job well while being equipped with a slick handle and uncanny court vision. But if you make the mistake of leaving him open he will bury the trey.

Shane Dezonie Guard (Team IZOD)- Dezonie had a solid tournament. He gives IZOD another strong ball handler and capable scorer. He averaged about 8 points a contest while playing his role.

Darius Johnson Guard (Team Takeover)- Johnson is a dynamic guard from the PV area. Right now he’s in combo mode and can fill up the scoring column quickly. He went berserk against New Heights while dropping a game high 25 points. He was one of the best scorer’s in the building on this level.

Malcolm Dread Guard (Team Takeover)- The younger Dread played well alongside Johnson. In their big game against CT Select Dread cashed in with 17 markers. He’s definitely a player that we will be keeping our eye on.

Hunter Dinkinson Forward (Team Takeover)- TT’s big man has a feathery touch and was a joy to watch this weekend. Size runs in his family therefore don’t be surprised he reaches 6’8. Takeover has a nice prospect in this kid.

Luke Hill Guard (Team Takeover)- Hill has the ability to get to the charity stripe. He showed that in their contest versus New Heights while dropping 15 points. In that game he was 6-7 from the foul line.

Cari Douglas Guard (CT Select)- Douglas caught fire in their marathon against ESYC. He drained 4 treys on his way to 20 points. He represented the New England area to the fullest.

Malik Proctor Guard (CT Select)- Proctor also got into the action against ESYC. He nailed two trey and made a living at the free throw line. I like the Douglas and Proctor combination for the CT Select future.

Nick Filchner Guard (EYSC Elite)- This high scoring guard can flat out shoot the ball. He possesses a quick release and understands how to get open on the floor. He has his best outing against CT Select while knocking down 5 treys and finishing with 25 points.

Julian Thomas Guard (EYSC Elite)- Thomas is Mr. Everything for the Pennsylvania team. He was his team’s best ball handler, scorer and rebounder. He’s a good asset for this squad.

Luke Kolaja Forward (Hilltoppers Heat)- The man in the middle for the Heat already understands the concept of paint and help defense. He’s still a little raw on offense but once he gets better footwork and body control he could be a good prospect.

Jalen Hammond Guard (Hilltoppers Heat)- Hammond does the job on the perimeter for the Heat. He’s a sharp shooter with good range and form. He was the Heat's best player during the Clash For The Cup.

Clash For The Cup 7th Grade Top Performers Part 2

Tah-Jai Walters (CIA Bounce)

The 7th Grade Division produced a new champion and had some fresh names that played great. Here’s our second look into the top performers from the Class of 2019.

Clash For The Cup 7th Grade Top Performers Part 2

Tah-Jai Walters Guard (CIA Bounce)- CIA made it to the quarterfinals and Walters once again led the way. This dynamic guard poured in 28 points in their semi-final loss to the Rens. I know he has to be the best 7th Grade scorer in Canada because he’s one of the best in the USA. This kid flat out gets buckets.

Joel Brown Guard (CIA Bounce)- Brown is the backcourt mate for Walters and he also had a good showing. His play alone lets everyone know that he runs the show. This kid has some serious court vision and ball handling skills. He also can help out in the scoring if needed.

Dejournal Cook Forward (Metro Flyers)- Cook donned a new uniform in his second Spotlight event. This time in Neptune he rocked with the Metro Flyers and helped them advance to the semifinals. His best performance came in their quarterfinal win over Grand Finale champion Team Nelson in which he tallied 16 markers and grabbed a host of boards.

Danny Rodriquez Forward (Metro Flyers)- Rodriquez is another piece of the Flyers huge front line. Once again he was a presence on defense and also gave Team Nelson problems with 16 points. You can’t teach size and once again broad shoulders help take them to the final four.

Elijah Hicks Forward (6th Man Warriors)- The athletic forward was everywhere for the Virginia team this weekend. He’s quick off his feet and can convert once he snatches the offensive rebound. His quickness when running the floor makes me believe he probably also good on the gridiron. He banged Brooklyn Rens for a game high 19 points.

Terrence Williams Forward (Team Takeover)- Williams had to leave early for school team obligations but he graced us with his presence on Saturday. His best game of the day came in their narrow defeat of CIA Bounce in pool play. The talented forward tallied 15 markers to help his boys squeeze out the win.

Mark Bradshaw Guard (Team Nelson)- Team Nelson got bounced out in the quarterfinals but Bradshaw went down swinging. The talented southpaw went for 20 points in the loss to the Metro Flyers. He still has the ability to score in bunches.

Fahmir Ali Guard (Team Final)- There’s definitely not many that can score like Ali. The Delaware product slowly rocks defenders to sleep before scorching them with a pull up or floater. He seems to have settled nicely into his new home with Team Final.

Khyree Temple Forward (Team Final)- The forward came up big for Team Final before fouling out against Team Takeover. He finished the game with 15 points and was difficult to contain at times.

Clash For The Cup 7th Grade Top Performers Part 1

Germir Robinson (Rens)

The 7th Grade Division produced a new champion and had some fresh names that played great. Here’s our look into the top performers from the Class of 2019.

Clash For The Cup 7th Grade Top Performers Part 1

Germir Robinson Guard (Rens)- This was Robinson's Spotlight debut with the Rens and his play reminded us of how he looked during the Super Skillcase in Atlantic City. The combo guard dominated with power and his scoring ability. I really like how he uses his left hand to finish at times and stays in attack mode. All weekend he played with passion which helped them capture the banner.

Philip Joseph Forward (Rens)- Some might regard Joseph has a physical enforcer but I did see some skills in the young forward. He was light on his feet and had decent touch on his turnaround in the lane. On defense he rebounds with a purpose and attempts to alter or block shots in his area. His play gives his team a attitude and burst of energy.

Judah McIntyre Guard (Rens)- It’s a joy to watch the pint size floor general bark orders to his larger teammates but he seems to get his point across. McIntyre once again set the tempo and got everyone involved. He’s definitely an important clog to this squad while serving as an extension of the coach on the floor.

Jose Figueroa Forward (Rens)- The new pickup is a wide space eater inside that understands that his role is to score close to the cup. His mass helped him get deep position and box out opposing rebounders. He has had good enough touch to get things done scoring wise in the paint.

Brian Hall Guard (Rens)- One of the best potential prospects in this group Hall seems to get longer each time he enters a Spotlight event. Right now his main weapon is his 3 point bombs. He knocked down 5 of them in their victory over Maryland Playmakers.

Jay Heath Guard (Team Takeover)- Heath has good size for a two guard and the game to match. Heat was able to slash to the lane for buckets or hurt you from deep with the trey ball. Just ask Team Final as he killed them with 20 points in their quarterfinal victory.

Josh Watts Guard (Team Takeover)- Speaking of slashers you could add Watts to this category. He also has good size for the position and is a capable finisher. He gets out on the break quickly and understands that his job is to get the ball in the bucket.

Carsten Kogelnik Forward (Team Takeover)- Kogelnik let things go early in the finals by knocking down two deep treys. He has good form on his stroke and had a big smile on his face when the coach gave him the green light.

Anthony Harris Guard (Team Takeover)- Harris played double duty while also performing on the 8th Grade level. His best game came in their semifinal showdown versus 6th Man Warriors. The athletic combo guard stormed his way to 16 markers and pushed Takeover into the finals.

Clash For The Cup 8th Grade Top Performers Part 3

Maurice Works (Team DEMI)

The Basketball Spotlight Clash For The Cup 8th Grade Division brought together the best talent on the East Coast. Here’s our final look into the 8th Grade Division.

Clash For The Cup 8th Grade Top Performers Part 3

Maurice Works Guard (Team DEMI)- DEMI knocked off Team Scan and much of the production came from Works. This kid is hard to guard off the dribble and will pull up at the drop of a hat. His array of moves baffled the Scan defenders as he skated by. His tenacious style fueled his teammates which helped them get the win.

Cameron Reddish Guard (Team Final)- Team Final had a rough weekend at the Clash but reddish managed to do his numbers. His used his fluid jumper to move the defense and appears to have more strength when finishing through contact. “The Prince” tried to carry them through the tough battles but just ran out of bullets.

Chris Cropper Forward (We R 1)- Cropper had another good showing at the Spotlight. He showed some athleticism and ability to score. He came up big in the 8th Grade Blue Division championship against Team RIO.

Daquan Campbell Forward (Rens)- Campbell is an athletic wing with a muscular build which allows him to defend up to four positions on the floor. He brings the power and toughness that this Brooklyn group is known for.

Sahdique Watkins Guard (Rens)- While other guards play in a panic Watkins sets his own pace. Defenses try but can’t seem to speed the Brooklynite up. He gets wherever he wants on the floor while scoring or getting teammates involved.

Scottie Lewis Forward (Team RIO)- Lewis play was still explosive in the 8th Grade Blue Division. Each time RIP seemed to be in trouble Lewis would take his game to another level and push them through. One of the biggest obstacles were the Brooklyn Rens in which the youngster went on a scoring and shot blocking tear to pull out the win.

Bryant Antoine Guard (Team RIO)- I think the lion has awoke in this kid. Antoine played with an attitude which helped his game explode. He got to the cup whenever he wanted and displayed some decision making skills. This kid will be something to watch in a few years.

Jordan McKoy Guard (Team RIO)- McKoy was a big finisher once again. He fills the lane with the best of them and finishes with either hand. He’s one of the quickest players with the pill and possesses a quick first step. He does need to have more confidence in his outside shot.

Alex Klatsky Guard (Team RIO)- Klatsky shot the ball well from the perimeter this weekend especially in their semifinal win versus CMEK. He fit well in the pace of the game and found the gaps in the defense. His stroke was definitely working.

Jalen Brooks Guard (Team RIO)- Brooks hit a couple of big shots when RIO’s really needed them. In the Brooklyn Rens game he nailed a clutch three that buried the NY boys. Brooks rarely shows overwhelming emotions, I guess because he’s been in many big games before.

Jordan Hicks Guard (6th Man Warriors)- The southpaw has a slick handle and is hard to guard once he starts penetration. He uses an array of crossover moves and spins to dash past defenders. He’s not a great shooter but is a shot maker.

Jonathan Preston Guard (6th Man Warriors)- Preston on the other hand is a great shooter while also possessing the wiggle and size to get a clean look. He was a true match up problem especially when his jimmy was dropping. He’s a talent that will make you take quick notice.

Curtis Ballard Guard (Team 12)- Ballard is built in the mode of a NYC classic guard. He has the unique ability to get in and out of spaces in a flash. He loves to handle and get into the seams of the defense.

Clash For The Cup 8th Grade Top Performers Part 2

Brandon Slater (Team Takeover)

The Basketball Spotlight Clash For The Cup 8th Grade Division brought together the best talent on the East Coast. Here’s part 2 of our top performers from Neptune, NJ.

Clash For The Cup 8th Grade Top Performers Part 2

Brandon Slater Forward (Team Takeover)- Last season’s Most Outstanding Player has grown a few inches and it has definitely impacted his game. This weekend he ran the floor like a gazelle and flew like an eagle. Brandon has a few dunks but also showed the range on his jumper that he is known for. The scary part is he’s still nowhere near a finished product. I know I will be reading about him for years to come.

Myles Dread Forward (Team Takeover)- Some might be bigger or faster but there’s no many smarter on the floor. Dread knows how to use his basketball IQ and positioning to get the job done. I like his midrange pull up and ability to score over shot blockers. He also brings an unselfish style including a willingness to make the extra pass.
Justin Moore Guard (Team Takeover)- The 7th Grader plays a shooter's role for this squad. He looked his best when he drifts to the corner and knocks down the trey ball. He shoots it with confidence and has the size to get it off over closing defenders. The players in his class will have their hands full when he decides to play against them.
Jalen Carey Guard (Rens)- Rens made a final four run and Carey carried much of the scoring load. He has a soft touch and scoring mentality to match. He’s very crafty with the rock and understands that a change of pace is crucial when creating space. Saturday he had a field as he scorched Team Final and Team Twelve. He was in a zone for a moment.
Zedrek Ferrell Guard (Rens)- I like the way this kid controls the tempo of the game. He’s been in a lot of big games as a lad so the atmosphere didn’t effect in at all. When the game was on the line against Team Final, Ferrell came up with one of the biggest shots of the tournament. It sent TF home for good.
Aaron Clarke Guard (Team Scan)- Clarke made his debut running the point and held his own against some of the best competition around. He logged long minutes while handling the point and had to also pick up the scoring load. His transition to the point will be a work in progress but I think his basketball IQ will get him to the finish line faster than most people think.

Walter Talley Forward (Team Scan)- Talley saved Scan from an early exit by carrying them over the Playaz in pool play. Talley received the rock near the free throw area and took advantage of the Playaz depleted front line. Once he got on a roll it seemed like everything he shot up went in. He finished through contact and showed good touch when converting.

Max Lorca Forward (Team Scan)- Lorca is very long and has a shot blocking presence even though he doesn’t enjoy the physical nature just of yet. He can finish put backs and shot the face up jumper. Down the road he should be a good catch for Scan.

Isiah Mucius Guard (Team Scan)- Another potential good catch should be Mucius. He has the frame for the game but hasn’t put all the skills together as of yet. He’s a wiry wing about 6’3 and should stretch out to be about 6’7. Once the finished product is done things could be scary with this kid.

Charles Pride Guard (Gym Rats)- Pride led the way for the pesky Syracuse squad. The slashing wing guard scores in bunches especially when he has the 3 ball working. He filled up the scorebook especially in their quarterfinal loss to the Rens. He did well in his Spotlight tournament debut.

Alex Gray Forward (Gym Rats)- Gray does all the dirty work for the Syracuse squad. He hit the glass, clogged the lane and keeps all the loose balls alive. He also has good touch in the paint and will drop in a floater over top of a shot blocker.
Mika Adams-Woods Guard (Gym Rats)- Adams-Woods also translated his Skillcase success to the Clash. In the open floor he’s difficult to slow down because his quickness combined with his change of direction puzzles defenders. When it’s time for him to finish off the play he uses his body to shield shot blockers which results a bucket or trip to the charity stripe.

Will Engelhart Forward (Gym Rats)- Engelhart was one of the purest shooters in the gym. When the defense concentrated on Mika and Charles, Will made them pay when they were slow on rotation. Each shot he let go seem to have a chance of going in. So you know he was almost automatic from the charity stripe. A big surprise was his toughness and ability to rebound inside. He didn’t back down from some of the top players in the country.

Stay Tuned As We Bring You More Coverage From The Clash!

Clash For The Cup 8th Grade Top Performers Part 1

Nazi Reid (Team IZOD)

The Basketball Spotlight Clash For The Cup 8th Grade Division brought together the best talent on the East Coast. Here’s part 1 of our top performers from Neptune, NJ.

Clash For The Cup 8th Grade Top Performers Part 1

Nazi Reid Forward (Team IZOD)- When Reid performs on the level he played this past weekend there’s not many better in the country. This youngster was a monster on both ends of the floor and had at dunk fest at the Clash. The 6’7 forward even showed some perimeter skills in terms of passing and knocking down the outside shot. On defense he’s a definite road block in the lane and causes the opposing team to change their offensive scheme at times. It was good to see the young fella return to playing with focus and passion.

Luther Muhammad Guard (Team IZOD)- The heart and soul of this squad didn’t disappoint. Once again he enters most games as the best defender on the floor and relishes in his role. He had opposing point guards terrified to bring the rock up the floor. But he also brought his offensive game in the tight semifinal against Team Takeover in which he displayed his improved jump shot especially from the corner. There are a few high school teams in the state that could use this kid at the top of their press right now.

Atiba Taylor Guard (Team IZOD)- The Takeover game was also Taylor’s best outing. He played with more patience at the point while picking his spots. He also knocked down a couple of jumpers while also scoring and helping on the glass inside. He used his size and savvy handle to keep the pesky Maryland guards at bay. He seems to show his best when the stage is it's brightest.
Jahvon Quinerly Guard (Team IZOD)- Quinerly showed some signs of getting readjusted to his old teammates but he Day 1 he still had spurts when he scored like we breath. The kid makes things look so easy when he’s on his game while rarely appearing rattled. His ability to get a clean look on all three levels continues to be his trade mark
Luis King Forward (Team IZOD)- King has stepped up his game and even stuck his head inside for some boards. He did most of his damage on the weak side of Reid and flashing to the post when Nazi was in the free throw area. He’s very effective on the baseline and provides Sports U with excellent length on the defensive end.
Kyle Thompson Guard (Team IZOD)- Thompson was a good pickup for IZOD because he helps them stretch the defense. He entered the game and gave them a spark with his outside shooting. He’s a good guard to have when the ball is being reversed around the perimeter.
Ja’Quaye James Guard (Playaz)- James is a throwback point guard because he actually controls the game without having to score a large amount of points. He’s nearly impossible to rip or keep out the lane. He finds holes in the defense like no other guard in the region and continues to be pass first. His penetrating ability and court vision reminds me of Brooklyn great Eugene Harvey.

Justin Winston Forward (Playaz)- When Winston is involved he continues to be one of the most versatile forwards in the region. He’s a matchup problem for most because of his quickness on the baseline. He’s a tireless worker on the glass on both ends of the floor and really had to carry the load after the loss of Armani Sexton.
Rob Miller Guard (Playaz)- The departure of Quinerly opened the door for another guard to step up and Miller answered the bell in the finals. He played with passion and gave IZOD a taste of his mid-range game and finishing ability. They will need more of this from him to be successful in the future.
Tavon Jones Guard (Playaz)- Jones game is catch and go and he enjoys his role. He’s wired to score and he doesn’t care who’s defending him. He looks his best in transition or beating a defender with his quick first step. If he attempts a few more jumpers it would open things up more for his drives.
Mikey Watkins Guard (Playaz)- Watkins showed some prowess as Playaz opened up an early lead before losing to Team Scan. Watkins was a hawk on defense and finished well in transition. He played with a lot of confidence and didn’t shy away from the contact.

Stay tuned because we are just getting started with Clash For The Cup coverage.
