J.E.M. ALL STAR CLASSIC 8TH GRADE HIGHLIGHTS!

J.E.M. ALL STARS CLASS OF 2017

The 2013 J.E.M. All Star Classic is in the books and the Class of 2017 gave us a great show. Check out the highlights as Ballin 365 gives us another great reel of action. We would like to thank the players for participating and wish them luck on high school. You guys will be deeply missed!

Basketball Spotlight Southern Feature: Jamie Lewis Has Arrived!

Jamie Lewis (Georgia United)

Over the years Spotlight has focused on players from the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast and, trust, we will never lose sight of our roots. However we are going to give our readers a view of some intriguing teams and players from the Southeast over the next week or so.

Each year several teams gear up for AAU Nationals by adding players to fill gaps or add depth. No team did a better job adding talent than 7th grade Georgia United. The team made an unsuspected 6th grade, Final Four in Hampton and followed up with a National Championship adding 6’ scoring guard, Jamie Lewis. Jamie performed most of the AAU season with powerhouse 8th grade Rockafella of Atlanta, GA, then hooked up with Coach T for Memphis.

Jamie scores from all 3 levels with equal parts physicality, range and guile. While in Memphis there was a buzz about the backcourt of GA United. We knew do it all Cordarius Hastings was running the show and using his aggressive style on both ends of the floor- but every report on them included, “Number #7 is killing people!”

#7 was Lewis and when we had a chance to sit and watch we were dazzled by his array of shot making and intensity on the offensive end. He plays a very mature offensive game and never seems in a rush or bothered by defensive pressure. We are excited to continue watching this Georgia sniper go for 20+ on a consistent basis.

J.E.M. ALL STAR CLASSIC 8th Grade Game Recap

Patrick Stryzala (Bayonne, NJ)

Patrick Stryzala scored 27 points but it wasn’t enough as the South Team defeated the North Team 107-101 to win the 8th Grade game of the 4th Annual J.E.M. All Star Classic. Andre Boykin and Tristan Patterson split 30 points for the South Team in the win.

MVP
Patrick Stryzala (Bayonne, NJ)- Stryzala arrived near Tip Off but didn’t need any real warm up time. Instead he blistered the South squad from the perimeter (4 treys) and scoring in traffic. He benefited greatly from the penetration style of the North guards. He quickly became a crowd favorite and took home the MVP honors when the contest ended.

Top Performers
Andre Boykin (Glendale, MD)- Boykin continues to extend his game to the perimeter. He nailed two treys and looked very comfortable shooting the mid range pull up. I can really see that he has been working in his game and it’s paying off.

Tristan Patterson (Smyrna, DE)-Patterson used this showcase to show he can finish with the best of them. He ran the lanes on the floor and scored the rock when the ball was dished his way. I like is explosiveness to the bucket and the touch he used to convert. He played his role to the fullest in this all star contest.

Manny Stokes (Hamilton, NJ)- The hometown kid felt very comfortable in this setting. He was very aggressive when attacking and picked his spots well. He’s a true slasher and showed more athleticism than I expected. He represented Mercer County in a big way.

Lonnie Walker (Reading, PA)- Walker is a still a little under the radar but I don’t think that will last long. He’s a natural scorer with the typical basketball frame to add to good instincts. I like his fluid motion when ball handling and his scoring mentality. He also showed he could play above the rim.

Trevon Duval (Wilmington, DE)- Speaking of playing above the rim, Duval loves this it. The hottest name in the region ended his elementary school career attacking defenders. His craftiness and feel for the game stood out. He’s a pretty finisher near the tin but prefers to jam it home in transition.

Eric Ayala (Wilmington, DE)- Ayala showed he could handle some of the point guard duties with a crisp handle and ability to penetrate. He’s the true meaning of the big guard. He gets anywhere he wants on the floor and can absorb contact before finishing. Delaware has another good prospect in this kid.

Deondre Bournes (Brooklyn, NY)- Bournes used his smooth pull up and perimeter skills to have a good showing. His size for the position is one of his best attributes along with his marksmanship while catching and shooting. He should be a great addition to any high school team next season.

Keith Williams (Brooklyn, NY)- Williams plays a lot bigger than his size. His versatility is one of his biggest weapons. He proved to be too big for small guards and too quick for forwards. I also like the intensity he plays with on the floor. This kid goes hard.

Marcus McClary (Linden, NJ)- McClary also played big because of the North’s lack of size. The lefty hit the glass and finished along the baseline. He also played pretty good defense which is rare in these types of games. His toughness, size and strength should help him walk right into varsity basketball.

Khalif Crawford (Linden, NJ)- Don’t be surprised if Crawford ends up as one of the top point guards in the this class. He’s not the quickest but his craftiness and shiftiness with the rock helps him skate pass defenders.

Stay tuned for the participant profiles coming soon!

J.E.M. ALL STAR CLASSIC 7th Grade Game Recap

Jared Bynum (Landover, MD)

Jared Bynum scored 17 points to help the Blue team defeated the Orange team at the 7th Grade game of the 4th Annual J.E.M. All Star Classic. Luther Muhammad had a big game for the Orange game.

MVP
Jared Bynum (Landover, MD)- Bynum took home the MVP honors after knocking down 3 treys and giving the crowd a treat with his ball handling. He used double crossovers and hesitation dribbles to breakdown defenders. He also likes taking the big shot and usually nails it when it counts. The crowd and the announcer loved this kid before this the game was over.

Top Performers
Myles Dread (Burtonsville, MD)- Dread cashed in with another good showing. I like how his perimeter game is developing and he showed an improved jump shot. I was surprised on how good he looked in an All Star setting because he’s such a great teammate. He used his unselfishness to shine in this event.

Brandon Slater (Centreville, VA)- The scoring machine got things a little. He scored on the fast break while stretching out with left hand finishes. He also helped his own cause by grabbing rebounds and scoring on putbacks. This kid runs the floor like a deer. He’s definitely one of the best finishers in the country.

Luther Muhammad (Irvington, NJ)- Muhammad had a MVP type performance as he played with the intensity of a championship game. On offense he lived in the lane by attacking the rim like a mad man. He twisted around defenders and scored over shot blockers. On defense he did his usual versatile performance by getting guarding multiple positions and loving it.

Walter Tally (New York, NY)- Tally impressed me with his face up range. He isn’t that strong off the dribble but he can create enough space to knockdown jumper from the foul line area. He’s also a major problem on the glass on both ends of the floor.

Armoni Sexton (Paterson, NJ)- Sexton was one of the best prospects in the building. When he’s slashing he resembles a gazelle dashing through the forest. His long arms help him extend to the rim but he will need to shot his jump shot from a higher point. That should come as he gets older and stronger.

Tyson Eitenne (Englewood, NJ)- Eitenne sparked the event with his quickness and offensive mentality. He can score from the wing and also set up teammates. On defense he isn’t afraid to guard any of the top ball handlers while trying to cause turnovers. He definitely has our attention.

J.E.M. ALL STAR CLASSIC 6th Grade Game Recap

Shariff Kenny (Districts Heights, MD)

Shariff Kenny and Marc Bruce were too much to handle as the Blue Team defeated the Orange Squad in the 6th Grade game of the 4th Annual J.E.M. All Star Classic. Justin Moore had an excellent showing for the Orange squad.

MVP
Shariff Kenny (District Heights, MD)- Kenny dominance was known before the start of the game that’s why he was switched to the Blue team. Once the contest started he took over the point guard duties and stole the show. His court vision and willingness to pass stood out and had the crowd in frenzy. He totally dominated the game without taking a shot. If he decides to play on this level full time I could be curtains for a lot of teams.

Top Performers
Marc Bruce (Bayonne, NJ)- Bruce also had an argument for MVP honors. He shot lights out from the perimeter while also scoring inside. He came out playing with high intensity and never let up. I saw him play several times and this had to be his best showing. He had everything flowing.

Justin Moore (Accokeek, MD)- This also was my first time watching Justin play with his grade level and I must say that he should be considered one of the top guards in the country. He made things look so easy and he seemed to see the game at a different speed than his counterparts. He gets anywhere he wants on the floor and can find his shot with ease. His flow was so natural and his instincts are very advanced.

Shamar Florence (Burlington, NJ)- Florence was a pleasant surprised because I thought he was just a post up player. I actually like the way he handles the rock and scores when attacking the basket. He shows good strides in transition and I like the upside he possesses. I have a new respect for his game.

Cole Antony (New York, NY)- Anthony started off a cold but eventually found his scoring rhythm. His ability to move without the ball helped him find his groove. You can see some of the special qualities he possesses as soon as he touches the rock.

Dajuan Piper (New York, NY)- Piper used his attacking style and defense to make an impact on the game. He’s tremendous in transition when using his body control to finish off plays. He’s a throwback NY guard for real.

Josh Pierre Louis (Plainfield, NJ)- The “Jet” was all over the floor. He carved his way through the defense and made some impressive plays. He also got busy on the defensive end of the floor. His ball pressure caused a few turnovers and he was a demon in the passing lanes.

Terrence Williams (Clinton, MD)- Williams had his moments. He has a feathery touch and some good footwork for the player this young. He also isn’t afraid to hit the glass for rebounds and play a little defense.

Trevon Alderman (Wilmington, DE)- I almost forgot about this youngster but he turned up is play in the second half. The explosive guard finished at the tin through contact and can be considered a natural scorer. We expect him to really take off next season.

Spotlight Alum "Boogie" Briscoe Rocking Defenders

Basketball Spotlight Alum Isaiah Briscoe recently played in the Big Strickland Showcase in NY. He showed why he earned the nickname “Boogie” while dancing and shaking defenders out their boots. Briscoe has a mean handle and seems to love to show it in these types of events. He was literally cutting up defenders.

The Makhel and Makhi Mitchell have reclassified into the Class of 2019. Next year they will attend Paul Charter Middle School in Washington, DC as well as rocking for the DC Blue Devils once again. This move will definitely have an impact on this class regionally and maybe nationally.

The twins AAU Coach John Perry agrees with the Mitchell brother’s move. “By re-classifying this allows them to mature in the classroom and on the floor. Word On The Street: Free Agency Season Begins

The AAU season has officially ended and players are on the move. In this edition in “Word On The Street” we will take a look at what players will be dressing in new uniforms next season. Most of these stories have been confirmed from credible sources.

Taylor Moves To Team Scan!
After quarterbacking the Supreme Team to the national championship game Atiba Taylor Jr. has decided to suit up with Team Scan next year. This move might swing the middle school power over the Hudson River to NY because other NJ players might travel over to team up with Taylor. We will keep you posted as this story develops.

Jones Jumps To Team Philly!
The top rising 7th Grade prospect in the region Mikeal Jones has decided to leave Team Nelson and link up with emerging Team Philly. Jones now will try to bring the young squad from the City of Brotherly into the big time scene. It will be interesting to see how Team Nelson rebounds from losing this big fish.

Winston Now A Playa!
Rising 8th Grader Justin Winston apparently has taken his talent to the Playaz Basketball Club and has already competed with them in a few tournaments . Winston was headed for an outbreak season before a hip injury sidelined him. Now he will be teaming up with an athletic Playaz crew that should make some noise on the Spotlight circuit next year.

Diary Of A Baller: Jaecee "Mayweather" Martin (Hartford, CT) Entry #6

Mayweather Breaking Down Defender
Hello BBall Spotlight.

Sorry I've been gone a few weeks but I've been on the go! My AAU team has been on the go for the last 3 weeks. We started out at the Summer Championships in Mt. Vernon, NY. I played up in 15u. We lost to Team Scan in the championship. I didn't play well and I know if I had played better we would have won. So that was a tough loss for me.

Next we went to Summer Classic East in Philly. I played 15u again and we lost in to the Jersey Playaz in the semi final. I played better, but I still could have done more to make us win.

Finally, we played in the Hall of Fame National Invitational in Springfield, MA. We got to avenge our loss to the Jersey Playaz and that felt great! And it set up a championship rematch with us and Scan. This was one of the best games of the entire season. We ended up losing in OT 72-70. But I was back to my normal self and got into the lane whenever I wanted. Even though we lost, it was a battle and both teams left respecting each other. Unique, Tremont and the rest of that team are great players. It takes both teams best effort to win. I love competing at that level! It makes me better and I feel it!

Up next, my brother and I have been selected to participate in the Chris Paul Camp down in Charlotte next week. That's an honor because not everyone gets those opportunities. I look forward to proving myself against the other top guards in class of 2017. Basketball Spotlight has prepared me for that. Also, after going against so many skilled guards during live period, I feel like I'm ready for anything! I will keep y'all posted...peace!
