Diary Of A Baller: Azar “A.Z.” Swain (Boston, MA) Entry #2
Kyle Casey and A.Z.
Thought of the Week: Buckets I realized that the game of basketball has changed a little bit since I first started playing. It seems like in order to get noticed by scouts and coaches, you have to get buckets. The game revolves around buckets. You can't just be a good defender and good teammate any longer. Don't get me wrong, those things are very good but in order to really get noticed, you MUST get buckets. Personally, my game really elevated when I started trying to put the ball in the hoop. I just added that attack to the other things that I already did. I was talking to my coach about this topic. All of the great players that you see in the NCAA and NBA can score the ball at will. That's what people like and want to see. Nobody makes a highlight reel of a nice kid playing good defense or showing good effort. The people that can score and put the ball in the rim get the recognition over those who can't. So, for all of the people that are reading this, if you want to do big things as far as basketball goes, then start working on ways to score the ball. You will see a huge jump in the exposure that you get. Still be a good teammate, and most importantly, BE COACHABLE. If you are a good person, good things will come to you. Karma exists. It's as simple as that.

What Did We Learn In Nashville?
The trip to Nashville, TN gave Basketball Spotlight a glimpse into the Class of 2018. Some of the top teams in the country were present and here are some of the things we learned.
What Did We Learn In Nashville?
WACG Is Back!
After a sketchy Saturday the #3 team in the country turned it up Sunday. The Tennessee squad blew the doors off the #2 team in the country (Georgia United) and the #4 team in the country (Kentucky Spiece). Their pressure defense was smothering and the substitute pattern send plays in by waves. '
Bagley Is The Real Deal!
While some players are just hype Marvin Bagley was worth the price of admissions. The southpaw passes the look test easily but also performed on the floor. He makes the game look so easy that some might confuse it with a lack of effort. He can give you the business in the paint or off the bounce. But believe me this kid has the chance to be something special.
Dotson Has Game!
Sometimes analysts including myself fall in love with the size of a player but in the case of Devon Dotson that has to be thrown out the window. This kid was a terror all weekend and his play helped give WACG their only loss of the weekend. I like to see how players react in the fire and Dotson came through like a storm trooper. His arsenal included scoring, dishing and playing hawk defense. His impact reminded me of a kid from New York named Erving Walker who later played at the University of Florida.
Class of 2018 Has Parity!
The best element of this event was the super pool. Many games in the super came down to the wire and sometimes the final shot. This proved that this class is very competitive and on any given night someone can get knocked off. Qon Murphy and Marquise Walker gave us the NCAA tournament feeling by hitting by shots to win games.
Fresh Faces Emerge!
The trip to Nashville also gave me a chance to see few top players for the first time like Kevin Easley of George Hill and Corderius Hastings of Georgia United. Easley carved up opponents in the paint like Tim Duncan and Hastings was electrifying at the guard spot. If there's a better 2018 guard in Georgia someone please let me know.

We All Can Go All Stars Make Statement!
We All Can Go All Stars Win Title
The We All To Go All Stars challenged some of the top teams in the country and came out on top. This 7th Grade Bunch on the WACG March Madness Tournament after beating the Georgia United in the finals by double digits. Now this group prepares for the ultimate AC Showcase. I can’t wait to see them get busy in America’s Playground.
Basketball Spotlight Player Of The Week: Marvin Bagley (WACG All Stars)
Marvin Bagley (WACG All Stars)
The Basketball Spotlight Player Of The Week goes to Marvin Bagley of We All Can Go All Stars 7th Grade team. Bagley was a dominate force this weekend as WACG won their loaded tournament in Nashville, TN. The lefty showed why he is regarded as one of the top players in the country. Basketball Spotlight would like to congratulate Bagley and remember to keep working hard because this is just the beginning.
Team IZOD Proves Supremacy On West Coast!
Supreme Team Storms Through Utah
Team IZOD, aka the Supreme Team, added to their impressive resume by posting a 6-0 record en route to winning the X-Factor Invitational in Utah. As usual, big man Nazi Reid did all of the dirty work, anchoring the IZOD defense, while being a terror on the glass to bring MVP accolades back to New Jersey. As dominant as Reid was on defense, Jahvon Quinerly was equally impressive on offense, averaging over 22 points per game on an assortment of drives, pull-ups and long-range jumpers. IZOD fought off a late rally from California’s MVP Flight Elite in the title game.
The No. 1-ranked team in the region has also won the Basketball Spotlight Tip Off Classic, HOF Junior Hoophall Championships and Agame Super Shootout.
Supreme Team roster: Atiba Taylor, Luther Muhammed, Jahvon Quinerly, Justin Winston, Nazreon Reid, Tyrek Chambers, Jalen Brooks, Triston Issac and Will Yarbrough.
Diary Of A Baller: Azar “A.Z.” Swain (Boston, MA) Entry #1
Azar Swain (Middle School Team)
First of all I just want to let everybody know that I'm super nervous to be doing the diary, but at the same time I'm thankful. I never thought that I would get a chance to tell my story to Basketball Spotlight. I really am happy to share my days with you guys. By the end of these basketball diaries, hopefully everyone will have a clear picture of who I am and what I'm about. I'm not going to hold anything back because I never know when I will ever get a chance like this again. Plus my teachers and coaches will be reading these also.

In The Spotlight: Qon Murphy Beats The Buzzer
Name: Qon Murphy
AAU Team: CB Spiders
Position: Shooting Guard
Class: 2018
Breakdown: The moment had arrived Murphy had the rock in a tied game with six seconds to go against national powerhouse We All Can Go All Stars. Murphy made a move like he was driving the lane then suddenly pulled up and let the shot go as the time expired. The shot rattled around and went in as CB Spiders knocked off WACG 65-63. It was the shot that most youngsters dream about.

WACG March Madness Game Recap: We All Can Go All Stars Gain Comeback Victory!
Marvin Bagley III (WACG)
We All Can Go All Stars fought back from a 13 point half time deficit to defeat George Hill All Stars 44-41. This was a high intensity game and both teams left it all on the floor.
Top Performers
Marvin Bagley Forward (WACG)- It was a tale of two halves for Bagley in the first stanza he didn’t find his groove against the intense defense of GH. But in the second half the wing stud showed why he is considered one of the top players in the nation. When he caught the rock he faced up and went straight to work. His length and ball handling allowed him to get through the defense and score. He also went to work on the glass and on defense by blocking or altering shots. The stage was big and he stepped up when it mattered.
Alex Jones Guard (WACG)- Jones runs the show and was able to help his team get back into the game. He picked his spots and made sure the game went through Bagley in the second half. On defense he was very active during the press and caused several turnovers. His poise helped them pull out the victory.
Cameron Johnson Guard (WACG)- Johnson put together a few buckets that helped them secure the win. He stretches the defense with his outside but can also finish off plays while absorbing contact. He’s important when teams double down on Bagley.
Kevin Easley Forward (George Hill)- Easley got busy in the first half. He brought his game to Bagley’s door and out worked the Arizona wing. In the second stanza I think fatigue set in and it was tough for him to keep the momentum going. Two games earlier they had an epic battle against CB Spiders.
Tiedus Jackson Forward (George Hill)- This blue collar worker doesn’t get a lot of press but his hard work got noticed in this defensive battle. He worked hard on the glass and in the lane for rebounds and buckets. He’s an energy player and fed off his teams emotions.
Keith Coleman Jr. Guard (George Hill)- The lefty is a scrappy guard that got into the scoring column by hitting treys and scoring in transition, He is also a hawk on defense and doesn’t mind giving up his body for the good of the team. He’s a player that understands his role.
Stay tuned because we are not done in Nashville!
WACG March Madness Game Recap: Walker's Shot Lifts George Hill
Kevin Easley (George Hill)
Marquise Walker hit a three pointer in the closing seconds as George Hill All Stars defeated CB Spiders 54-53 at the We All Can Go Tournament in Nashville, TN. Kevin Easley led George Hill with 22 points and Devon Dotson paced the Spiders with 16 markers in this 7th Grade Showdown.
Top Performers
Kevin Easley Forward (George Hill)- Easley gave the CB Spiders serious problems in the post. The 6’4 forward used his good footwork and soft touch to torture the defense. I also was impressed with his ability to hit the face up jumper. He’s very polished for such a young player and only should get better. Finally, he was an intimidating force on the defensive end by blocking shots and getting rebounds.
Marquise Walker Guard (George Hill)- Walker is a home run hitter which means he likes going for the big play at the big moment. Well, today he answered the bell by knocking down the go ahead trey ball in this action packed contest. He’s willing to get his teammates involved even if he over penetrates sometimes. He has some good basketball instincts.
Antran Cushinberry Guard (George Hill)- This guard has to be one of the best on ball defenders in the country. He made the Spiders ball handlers work for everything they got. He ended the contest with about six steals and caused a bunch of havoc. He fouled out late in the game but it was a question on his amount of fouls.
Devon Dotson Guard (CB Spiders)- This blur with the rock led the Spiders in scoring and got them back into the contest after the fell behind early. In transition he puts tremendous pressure on the defense and exhibits superb body control. This kid is a gamer!
Qon Murphy Guard (CB Spiders)- Murphy’s physical play makes him an instant impact. He has picked up his aggression and is a gutsy shot taker. If I could name player that he impacts the game like it would be Ron Artest because of his strength and versatility. Stay tuned as we bring you more action from Nashville.
WACG March Madness Showcase Game Recap: Wisconsin Playground Elite Wins Thriller
Donovan Billings (WPE)
The We All Can Go March Madness Tournament gets underway tomorrow but tonight they had a few showcase games featuring some of the top teams in the country. Basketball Spotlight was present for the 5th Grade game as Wisconsin Playground Elite defeated We All Can Go All Stars 73-71. Here are the players that impressed us.
Top Performers
Donovan Billings Forward (WPE)- Billings took home MVP honors and it wasn’t close as the post player dropped 39 points and about 20 rebounds. He was a dominate force in the paint as WACG had no answer for him close to the basket. He understands where his bread is buttered so he doesn’t waste time on the perimeter. This squad is the defending national champs and I can see why with Billings controlling the paint.
Tyre Terry Guard (WPE)- Terry likes to dance with the but shows some quickness and point guard instincts. He made some big plays while penetrating and dishing the rock to Billings. He was very effective against the aggressive WACG defense.
Jalen Suggs Guard (WPE)- Suggs wasn’t spectacular but I can see he’s one of the lead catalyst on this squad. He has good size for this grade level and knows how to maneuver in the lane. His outside wasn’t bad even though he uses two hands in his release. I think we will be reading a lot about him in the future.
Jareon Tolliver Guard (WPE)- The pint size guard played big down the stretch. He made a few big drives into the paint and even snatched a couple of key rebounds. His quickness was definitely present on the press which helped WPE get the comeback win.
Ray Tyler Guard (WACG)- This small southpaw showed tremendous toughness and clutch skills. He buried the trey ball from NBA range and even showed he had a floater in the arsenal. In the big moments he wanted the rock in his hands and wasn’t scared to fire away.
Jawan Carpenter Guard (WACG)- I think Carpenter has a chance to be special one day. But right now his body isn’t strong enough to complete plays that his mind is trying to translate. So sometimes he over dribbles or tries to make to spectacular pass, but when everything comes together he should be a good one.
Marcus Bagley Guard (WACG)- Bagley is another kid I think has a good upside. He strokes it with ease and I love his poise when playing. If he get anywhere near the size of his older brother Marvin things could get scary. I do think he needs to be pushed a little more so e doesn’t take plays off.
Marcus Fitzgerald Guard (WACG)- Fitzgerald lit up the net in the second half. He shot some deep treys with ease that helped WACG go stay in the game. I can tell he’s quality shooter because when he let a shot go the crowd reacted like they expected it to go in.
Namari Burnette Forward (WACG)- WACG almost got the win after Burnette went to work in the second half. He was hard to guard off the dribble and has an array of moves to get around shot blockers. He will ultimately be a guard but playing this position will improve his toughness.

Top Performers
Quade Green Guard (Team Final)- This was the third event I saw Green play this season and his best output. This time out the combo guard didn’t force the action but instead played within the flow of the team. He picked his spots in the half court set and exploded to the basket in transition. His mature approach helped his team pull out the victory.
Daron Russell Guard (Team Final)- This pleasant surprise sparked Team Final off the pine when their offense stalled. He nailed a few treys and converted on the fast break. The Mid Atlantic boys definitely needed his contribution and he played his role very well.
DeAndre Vilmer Forward (Team Final)- Vilmer also registered his best performance of the season. The energy player attacked the lane and scored over the big post players. He also played excellent defense and used his quickness to disrupt the Rens offense. He looked like the slashing athlete of last year.
Evan Logino Forward (Team Final)- Once again Logino brought his hard hat. But this time the job was a little tougher because New Rens had massive Dwayne Thomas inside. Evan used his skills to maneuver around the mountain and get a few buckets. He also took on the task of keeping this brick house off the glass.
Tyler Bournes Guard (New Rens)- Bournes is the scoring catalyst for this blue collar squad. His outside shot looked good in form but wasn’t falling like times in the past. But He did get a few buckets because he’s a natural shot maker and lives for the big moment.
Pierce Bozcar Guard (New Rens)- The sharp shooter helped Rens climb back in with some deep jumpers. His ability to stretch the defense helps open things up inside for this physical bunch. He actually pulled one trey from the hash mark.
Marco Morency Forward (New Rens)- Marco had to be one of the best athletes in this event. The slashing wing player excelled on the baseline and helped out on the glass. I would like to watch a little more so I can analyze his ball handling and outside shot.
