The CT Jr. Phenom concluded today and Basketball Spotlight was there for coverage. Here’s a look at some of the top performers from the Class of 2015.
CT Jr. Phenom Day 2 Top Performers (Class 2015)
Roy Kane Forward (Norwalk, CT)- Kane seems to have grew a few inches since the Super Showcase. He continues to patrol the middle and blocks shots constantly. His offensive moves are still developing but he does make an impact cleaning the glass and getting put backs.
Christian Vital Guard (Queens Village, NY)- Vital was one his game today. He beat the defense down the floor in transitions for a couple of buckets. I like is quickness and how he can push the pill with either hand. He has some slick moves.
Jamari Stephenson Guard (Piscataway, NJ)- Stephenson caught fire in his final game while torching the offense with buckets. His pull jumper in the lane was money and he showed some explosiveness. Jamari finished even showed some swagger during the last contest.
Kyle Allman Guard (Brooklyn, NY)- Allman showed good promise controlling the tempo during his game. He danced around defenders and demonstrated good court vision. Kyle can also hit the deep outside shot.
Amori Walters Guard (Harlem, NY)- Walters uses the glass well in the lane while having enough dribbling skills to get pass defenders. He has a strong build and scorer’s mentality. He was one of the top finishers of the day.
I haven’t covered a high school event in years but I had the privilege of watching some action in CT. I will not be returning to writing about high school players but when I see someone special I have to let you guys know. This special player is Kuran Iverson a sophomore from Connecticut. The 6’8 guard has point guard ability and can get a clean look on demand. His athleticism is one of a kind. This kid just needs to stay focused and learn to compete hard against inferior competition. If he continues on the right course you probably will be looking at a future NBA lottery pick.I've seen a lot of great players and he has to be one of the best talents I ever laid eyes on.
Basketball Spotlight traveled to New Haven, CT for their Jr. Phenom Camp. This event featured some of the top young talent from CT thru NJ. Here’s a breakdown of the players that impressed us today. Here’s the Class of 2017 report.
CT Jr. Phenom Top Performers (Class 2017)
Nate Pierre Louis Guard (Plainfield, NJ)- If there’s a better scorer in this class please let me meet him. The reigning POY showed why he’s one of the best in America. He put the rock in the hole in every way possible. He got the rim and finished in traffic while also pulling up in the lane. But Nate’s new weapon is his improved jump shot. He’s knocking down the trey ball with consistency and from deep range.
Marques Watson Guard (Brooklyn, NY)- Watson had the quickest crossover in the building. When he applied this move the lane opened like the Red Sea. Watson also loves dishing the rock especially in the open floor while adding a flash to his passes. He will definitely be tough to guard on this level.
TrevonDuval Guard (Newark, DE)- The smooth guard showed some flashes but seemed a little bored against the competition. He got anywhere he wanted on the floor and completed plays with the greatest ease. He’s a smooth operator.
Jaecee Martin Guard (Hartford, CT)- It was business usual for this sparkplug guard. I mean no one can really prevent him from penetrating so he had a free pass to the paint. I love is body control and how he uses to floater to get over shot blockers.
Aaron Clarke Guard (Parsippany, NJ)- Clarke still has the ratchet but adding some quickness and ball handling to is arsenal. He shook up a few defenders before hurting their eyes with a mid range jumper. I like how is game has improved.

Khalir Johnson Forward (Wilmington, NJ)- The big boy snacked on this competition. Johnson was the biggest player in the gym and didn’t waste any time dominating. He got deep position and used the window to secure buckets. He also filled the lane well when running the floor.
Keondre Fair Guard (Hartford, CT)- Fair could get charged with a felony because of the way he robbed ball handlers. He picked several pockets before coasting in for lay ups. He also displayed that court vision that’s makes him an impact player on this level. He got busy today.
Desiree Emmore Forward (E. Hartford, CT)- Emmore is one of only a few lady hoopsters to grace this site and she earned it. The southpaw dominated the boys inside on this glass and converted just about everything. He has good touch from long range and near the cup. Keep an eye for this young lady. She was like a female David Robinson
Jordan Tucker Guard (Westchester, NY)- Tucker didn’t get many touches because of his guard dominated squad but you could see his potential. He already has good size for a perimeter accompanied by a strong frame. His shot was on point and he did show some dribbling ability.
Deondre Bourne Guard (Brooklyn, NY)- Bourne had no problem getting into the lane. He got past defenders with an array of slick moves and usually made the correct decision with a drop off. He’s a crafty ball handler.
Paul Person Guard (Bronx, NY)- Person was very smooth as usual in terms of creating opportunities and finishing. He always pushes the rock with his head up and constantly moves the ball forward with a pass. He’s fun to watch at times.
Julian Conover Forward (Spring Valley, NY)- Conover put in some work by following shots and scoring from the baseline. He needs to handle the pill a little more because he will most likely be a guard in high school.
Corey Brown had 24 points and Deshawn Washington added 10 markers as Playtime Basketball defeated NYC Gauchos 65-55 to win the Grand Finale 12 and Under Championship. Team To Beat: Indy Hoosiers
The Hoosiers finished #4 in the country and have a cast of top talent. This was my first time watching this crew but I saw the potential in their players and coaching style. Vijay Blackmon and Eron Gordon are one of the top combinations in the country period.
Dark Horse: Elite Cavaliers
The EC was the class for the age group for years. They finished ranked lower than usual at the 12U AAU Nationals. They are one of the best coached teams in the country and can’t beat anyone on any given night.
Preseason Player Of The Year: Vijah Blackmon (Indy Hoosiers)
Blackmon has the complete package in terms of size and ability to make plays. At the 12U Nationals he showed that he was ready for the big stage while leading his squad to the Final Four. We will definitely get a chance to watch Blackmon rock this season.
Best Kept Secret: Malik Dow (Hoop Dreams)
Dow is a promising prospect that didn’t attend the AAU Nationals. He was a post player but now has developed to play the wing. In due time is he continues to develop his jump shot and ball handling he should be a force to reckon with.

About Sharette Dixon: Prior to her passing on March 23, 2009, Sharette Dixon dedicated her life to educating young people. She was an instructor of English at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn and was particularly interested in African-American literature. Sharette was born in Brooklyn, raised in California and attended California State University at Fresno, where she was a McNair Scholar and earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English.
The talk of the Northeast has been the Future Legends League hosted by the #4 Team In America Philly Aztecs. The League is headed into its third week and seems to be buzzing. After a tough battle with DC Assault 13U, The Fairfax Stars defeated Team Takeover 47-26 to win the Paul VI Virginia Invitational Tournament. Fairfax got a solid effort from the entire squad and are gearing up to make their Spotlight debut at the Grand Finale.

The Reigning National Champs walk on the court with a certain swagger. But when your roster possesses top players Keenan Black and Seven Woods you are capable of beating anyone. This season they will have to walk around with a huge target on their backs. Can they handle the heat? Basketball Spotlight will be watching!
Dark Horse: Team Felton:
We didn’t get a chance to see the real Team Felton after Mike Buckland went down with a season ending arm injury. The point guard runs the show and loves feeding arguably the top player in the country in youngster Harry Giles. Jalek Hamilton is a defensive specialist and field in at the point when Buckland went down.
Preseason Player Of The Year: Harry Giles (Team Felton)
It’s still early but with the correct work ethic and development this kid could turn out to be something special. Right now he’s about 6’5 but can handle the rock on the wing. His body is developing like a young colt and when it all comes together expect an explosion.
Emerging Star: Seven Woods (SC Ravens)
After the 12U Nationals Woods was launched in the national spotlight. This youngster has cat quick moves and unbelievable athleticism. During the tournament he grew more comfortable running the team from the point position. We will be watching to see how he develops this season.

Team To Beat: NYC Gauchos
Paul Suber has built a tough squad that can make a serious run for regional “Team Of The Year”. The addition of NyRhique Smith gives them the legit floor general they were missing a year ago. Idris Joyner has also joined the Choz therefore NwanachoNwana can move to the 3 spot. This has the making of an explosive bunch.
Dark Horse: New Heights
You never can bet against the heart of a champion so you have to give NH a fighter’s chance. Despite rumors reigning POYRakymFelder has decided to stay home but their biggest pickup has to be big time coach Kimani Young. Young has a National title under his belt and instills the discipline that might propel NH to another Metropolitan crown.
Preseason Player Of The Year: Rakym “Bed Stuy Bully” Felder
Right now Felder has to be the favorite for this award. He’s capable of defeating teams single handily with his scoring prowess. Anytime he touches the floor he gives NH a good chance of winning. It will be interesting to see he takes to Young’s coaching style.
Fresh Face: Unique Mclean (Team Scan)
This is Mclean’s first Spotlight season with this age group. We will have a better read on where he fits in during the season but we do know he will be an immediate impact. Team Scan might have found a hidden gem in this kid.

Breakdown: Gantz capped off a great season with a good showing at the Basketball Spotlight Super Showcase. He’s a heady floor general with extreme confidence and the ability to make plays or get others better. During the season he hit the circuit with Back To Basics and finished things off with Central Penn Ballers. We are very excited to see what Kobe has in store for us this year. Check out his film from this past season.
This week was a good week. I got a lot of quizzes back and I was pleased with my scores. On Monday I got my Language Arts test back, and I got a 91. I made a couple of mistakes, but each problem was worth so much that one wrong answer cost a lot. I got my Science quiz back on Thursday, and I got a 96. I studied hard and it showed. In math I got a 92 on my quiz. Once again I only missed two problems, but each one was worth 4 points. In Language Arts we have a big project due Nov 2nd so I gotta get crackin’ on that. I have a district test on Friday, and a Science test on Wednesday and I’ll let you know how I do on both of those.
In between studying I worked out in my backyard. I did a lot of physical workouts this week. Getting stronger is an important part of my game because I like to penetrate the defense and get to the basket and draw contact. This year players are going to be bigger and I need to be able to play strong and finish off plays. I also shot a lot in my backyard. My dad was away in Texas covering the Yankee’s game so it was just me working on my shot. I worked on floaters so I can get inside with the trees and float it over them. I also worked on my midrange shooting.
On Saturday I had my first NJ Got Game practice of the year. I was excited on the way to practice because we were going to see our new coach. Our new coach got there late so while we were waiting we worked on plays and shell defense with Coach Claudio. When our new coach walked in I was soooo surprised. I’m pleased to announce that our new coach is…Coach Pete! He came back because he wanted to finish off what he started. Everyone on the team is happy and excited. Shout out to Coach Pete for coming back and helping us get better. This should be a very good year for us.Sunday we didn’t have our Zoo Crew game so I went to Coach Pete’s workout. We learned a lot of lessons about paying attention to details. Unfortunately, the consequence for not paying attention to details is running, and we ran a lot!
On Monday we didn’t have school so my family and I went to the Baird Center (that’s our town’s recreation center). My Dad and I ran 6.5 miles! My Mom and brothers ran too, just not as far. My great grandmother sat in a chair and watched us all go round and round. Running builds up my stamina and I find it fun for some reason. I was very tired but after that we walked over to the basketball courts and had a little workout. My dad and brother were both guarding me because I was working on getting double teamed and working on moves to counter the double team.

Derryck “Houdini” Thornton's play this summer has caused a buzz around the country. He finished as the #1 point guard at the 12U AAU Nationals and recently put in work at the Pangos West Frosh/Sophomore Camp. The scouting services weren’t the only ones taking notice as Derryck received his first recruiting letter from USC. Early interest in young recruits has become normal practice for Colleges and Universities. I don’t expect Thornton to commit to any school any time soon but I’m sure other letters will be soon to follow. We will keep you updated on his progress and hopefully get him to the East Coast to our Super Showcase this summer. I guess even "Houdini" couldn't hide from USC!
Hello Basketball World. Its Your Boy "Fresh". This week was about teamwork. Monday, Team Final had a game. We won by 30 because we did the little things that it takes to win. We were talking on defense, shared the sugar, and we all had the same mind set and that was to play together. On Tuesday, Team Final had practice and everyone played as if it was a championship game. Each person is getting the person next to him better.
On Wednesday, I went to the barber shop, light fade and keep it dark on the top as usual. I also go up a couple shots and played rough house against the older kids. On Thursday, Team Final had another practice and it was also very intense. Since we are playing against the Varsity kids it has really got us better, stronger, and more IQ of the game. Friday, I had a game at Aztecs Future Legends league with my boys Sam and Shizz. It was my first game up there and I see there is very good competition. I came late, and when I got there it was 5 on 4 and my team was down by like 10. But, you know once I got in the game we came back and won. I'm not trying to say I made my team win but, one thing I saw that was missing was leadership.
On Saturday, Team Final had practice we got up shots and went over the basic things. After practice I went outside and got up more shots for the big game next day. Sunday we went back to N.Y.C for the Funsport league. Before our game against Team Scan 3 NBA players came out (including Amare Stoudemare). People called that game "The Show" but from the beginning it was one-sided. We won the game by like 15. Shout out to Sammy for having an awesome game and he had like 20 points. After that game we played CP3 Elite and we won by like 22 points. Til next week always remember defense wins games.
What's Up Everybody it's the "Shoota" coming to you. This week was good and exciting! Everything was good at school, I had a math project due and I turned it in a day early. My teacher commented about how neat it was. I'm thinking I know this...lol..I'm always neat.
On Monday we played our game in the High School League we won by like 25 or maybe 30. Everybody was making plays, that was our best game as a team. I can't wait until we play Camden Catholic again we lost to them by 4.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday I had my daily workouts at Life Center Academy and Trenton Catholic Academy. We did a lot of drills and shooting off the dribble, we also did our 4 on 4 quick shooting drill. I like this drill because it's really competitive. On Tuesday, Davon Reed who attends Princeton Day School was there working out with us, the coach from Virginia Commonwealth University was there to watch him workout. And on Thursday the coach from Quinnipiac University was there to check Matt Johnson out.
Early Saturday morning Ronnie Paden (TCA) and I had a workout with the trainer Ralph it was conditioning only. The workout was hard but I felt good after, I'm definitely going back for more gotta get my cardio up. Saturday afternoon Team Final had practice; we did a lot of shooting drills, nothing to hard just paying more attention to stepping into your shot the right way.
Sunday we had two games in Brooklyn at the Funsports League. The first two weeks of the league were pre-season games, we went undefeated, can't wait for the regular season to start. Before each pre-season game both teams go through a short workout; well our team and Team Scan (NY) were in a big circle at center court stretching, and the guy on the Mic said look who's in the building. Nobody was really paying attention to him until we heard New York Knicks and out walks Amar'e Stoudemire, Danilo Gallinari, and Wilson Chandler. Everybody froze for a second; it was like everybody was unsure if we should go over to them. The guy on the Mic said something; go over or go meet, after that it was on. They got bum rushed by the players on the floor and the people in the stands, they were giving away t-shirts and small towels. By the time I got to them all the t-shirts were gone, but I did get a towel.
Channel WPIX filmed the event; me and my boy Nassir Barrino got a chance to answer a few questions for the camera crew. I was nervous at first, but I relaxed and just answered the questions. They only showed me answering one question on tv but, they asked me about 7 or 8 questions.
Amar'e is not as big as I expected, but Gallinari is a big dude, they were all cool and they stayed to watch the games.

Hello basketball world this the kid Blair “Fresh” Howard and this is my second diary entry for Basketball Spotlight. This week was a good and exciting week for me. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I was helping my coach out with conditioning the little kids. After that it was free gym at the Boys and Girls Club and I put a couple hundred shots up.
About school I have been picking my grades up to all B’s and one A so I can stay on top of my game, if I cannot produce in school I cannot produce on the court. School is my main priority right now because I want to make it to college and play ball for a D1 school. I cannot accomplish that if my grades are not right. I also want to make my coach, my parents, my family, and my friends happy. It is all starting now that’s why I am getting prepared for it by becoming more mature in the class and the court.
Thursday, I finished my homework as soon as I got home because I had to workout with my father for 3 hours. We were working on IQ (my weakness), my jump shot, my handle, and my passing. At home I work on getting stronger and jumping higher because my father has workout room in our house. Every day I do 200 push-ups, 130 sit-ups, and 200 toe raises. After that I’m done then I take a shower and just chill while playing 2k.
I repeat this workout on Tuesdays and Thursday’s because most of the time I’m at the Boys and Girls Club in Hartford playing ball and doing homework. My coach is the gym instructor there so me and my team always working on something in the gym. With basketball season coming up, it’s important to go into the season in great shape…all we do is run teams out the gym. Also, I might be going to a camp next weekend, so I want to have a great showing there.
But until then I will keep doing good in the class and going hard on the court. I will keep ya’ll posted and I will holla at yaw next week!!!
We told you about Spencer almost two years ago and let you know he’s potential was unlimited. Horace participated in the Pangos East Frosh and Sophomore Camp and got rave reviews from Scout John Stovall. Spencer has now reached the national spotlight but the road is still long young fella keep working hard. Check out his work at a recent camp.
Breakdown: Justin Jenifer was one of the first baby baller phenoms when his training video made the national media networks as a 10 year old. Since then Jenifer has dealt with the media hype but still continues to work on his game. He rocks with Team Melo and when I saw him last season I was impressed with the floor general's feel for the game and ability to be a playmaker. We will be making sure we take a look at this youngster during our travels this season.
The New York Knicks sent 3 players (including Amare Stoudemire) to Funsport to surprise the players participating in the Jr. Pro League. I like this video because it features some of the top players showing their excitement.
Juwan Gooding is a bona fide scorer. The southpaw is capable of putting up serious numbers each time he touches the floor. From Boston to Florida he has been known to torch defenses. Recently we sat down with Juwan and here’s our One on One.

BS: Who’s your favorite player? JG: Kevin Durant because he’s new on the scene and continues to get better and better.
BS: What’s the strongest part of your game? JG: I would have to say my scoring.
BS: What part of your game needs the most work? JG: I think finishing with my right hand.
BS: What do you think is your best game? JG: I scored 45 points at Five Star Camp in the championship game.
BS: What’s your dream college? JG: North Carolina, they had great players including Michael Jordan.
BS: What are your career goals? JG: To play in the NBA or become a criminal investigator.
BS: Who’s the best player in the region? JG: I feel that I am because I’m very experienced and have the body of work.
BS: What do you feel about the Basketball Spotlight events? JG: You have to be focused because the competition is great.
Basketball Spotlight has been present for some big time games especially last season. One of the best games I had the honor of watching was the Mid Atlantic 13U Championship featuring Team Final vs. Team Rebels. It was a packed house at the Tri-State Complex and it was a true grudge match. I’m happy that someone was smart enough to record this contest and put it on Youtube because it was truly a classic game. Enjoy!
Breakdown: I have been hearing a lot of noise about this kid from Delaware. Reports have him dominating HS All Star Games and Rec. Leagues. From his footage he seems to have a good feel for the game and great athleticism. His court vision looks good and he as good touch from the mid range. We can’t really rave about Jenkins until watching him in person. Which will be very soon!
Breakdown: With Juwan Gooding and big Marcus Jackson suiting up sometimes Dobere can get over shadowed a little. But I see the strides this youngster is making on the low. Dobere is becoming a tenacious defender while playing the passing lanes and showing on the ball prowess. On the offensive end, his jump shot continues to improve but I like the way he gaining confidence running the point. His toughness will take him a long way.

Attention Team Coaches and Administrators, The Basketball Spotlight Grand Finale Schedule For December 4th and 5th is receiving heavy attention. Many teams that have expressed interest have their names posted as a courtesy but please keep in mind that the tournament only can hold a certain number of teams. Therefore below I have listed the limit for each age group below. Participation is on a first fully register, first serve basis. Teams that don’t make the deadline (November 14th) or are pushed out because the age group is at capacity can pre-register for the Clash For The Cup that will be held the end of January.
Showcase Report: Watson wasted no time showing he was among the elite at this event. The youngster got to the basket at will and converted lay ups in bunches. He really was feeling it and let the region know he’s a force to be reckoned with. Check out some his work below on the video. He’s wearing #1 in red.
Roy Kane Jr. (Norwalk, CT)
Christian Vital Guard (Queens Village, NY)- Vital was one his game today. He beat the defense down the floor in transitions for a couple of buckets. I like is quickness and how he can push the pill with either hand. He has some slick moves. 
Jamari Stephenson Guard (Piscataway, NJ)- Stephenson caught fire in his final game while torching the offense with buckets. His pull jumper in the lane was money and he showed some explosiveness. Jamari finished even showed some swagger during the last contest.
Kyle Allman Guard (Brooklyn, NY)- Allman showed good promise controlling the tempo during his game. He danced around defenders and demonstrated good court vision. Kyle can also hit the deep outside shot. 
Amori Walters Guard (Harlem, NY)- Walters uses the glass well in the lane while having enough dribbling skills to get pass defenders. He has a strong build and scorer’s mentality. He was one of the top finishers of the day.
