NJ Got Game Tourney 13U Championship Recap: NYC Gauchos Take Charge!

Gauchos Got Game!

Malik Matlin and Kai Mitchell scored 15 points apiece as the NYC Gauchos defeated The City 61-45 to win the 13U title at the NJ Got Game tourney. Wolfgang Novogratz finished with a team high 17 markers in the loss.

Top Performers

Malik Maitland Guard (Gauchos)- Pound for Pound Maitland has to be one of the top point guards in NYC. The lefty turns the corner in a blur while driving past defenders easily. He frame allows him to absorb contact once he gets into the lane and I also love how he drains the mid range jumper.

Kai Mitchell Forward (Gauchos)- Mitchell did damage inside against the lanky forwards from The City. He has good touch and knows how to maneuver around shot blockers. His wide frame gave the defense problems all day.

Davonte Green Guard (Gauchos)- It wasn’t a high scoring game for Green but I loved the way he got his teammates involved instead of forcing the action. He showed good court vision and leadership during the finals. Down the stretch he did hit a couple of runners to help seal the deal.

Rickey McGill Guard (Gauchos)- McGill came in and gave the Choz a spark off the bench. He dropped in a few floaters and displayed a nice stroke from the perimeter. On defense he pressured The City guards’ full court.

Wolfgang Novogratz Guard (The City)- Wolfie did his usual damage pulling up for jumpers. His trey ball stroke kept things interesting for most of the afternoon. Once he sets his feet and releases the pill it’s usually money in the bank.

Mike Williams Guard (The City)- No Donovan Mitchell meant Williams had to handle the Choz pressure alone. He was able to get a few buckets after penetration and in transition. But you could see late in the game he wore down a little.
