Banas From Hershey, PA Played Sweet Around The Basket
The evening session of the Hoop Jr. Elite Camp allowed us to take a look at some new talent and some familiar faces. The games were action packed and very entertaining. Here’s a breakdown of the top performers last night.
Day 2 Top Performers (Evening Session)
Class 2012
Matt Banas 6’6 Forward (Hershey, PA)- Banas’s hometown name goes well with his game because the long forward finished his moves with a soft kiss of the glass. He was totally dominant inside as he sliced across the lane for turn-around moves. His mobility kept the defenders at bay because most of them couldn’t stay in front or keep him away from the basket.
Jalen Harris 6’1 Forward (Winchester, VA)- Harris is the energy/role player for his squad. He cleans the glass and makes the hustle plays necessary for them to win. On defense he challenges the opposition and makes them work hard for buckets or rebounds.
Damien Williams 6’4 Forward (Plymouth, PA)- Williams battled Banas not in the game but for top post players honors for the evening. He brought out his entire arsenal of moves including reverse lay ups. He also put the ball on the floor comfortably and knocked down the short jumper even off the dribble. I would label him a very quick 4 at this point.
Richard Hoskins 5’10 Guard (Philadelphia, PA)- Hoskins once again was tough to stop in the scoring column. He just out works opponents and wills his way to the hole. He can score by driving himself or beating competitors to the backboard for put backs. He’s always around the rock and makes things happen.
Nafis Brown 6’0 Guard (Harrisburg, PA)- Brown is not the most fluid guard in the camp but his Mateen Cleaves style of play is hard to stop on this level. He hits the hole like a running and usually scores dribbling hard to the right side of the floor. As he gets older he will have to strengthen the use of his left hand.
Malcolm Allgood 6’4 Forward (Norwich, CT)- Allgood is still a little raw especially on the offensive end but the space eater made his presence felt with brute strength. His hammer style allowed him and his teammates several opportunities at the basket.
Class 2013
John Vasser 5’6 Guard (Marlboro, MA)- Vasser is an athletic guard that relishes when he’s out in the open floor. He has a good chance of gear and will burst past defenders when they are back pedaling. Once he gets into the air near the hoop he knows how to adjust his shot to avoid potential shot blockers.
Class 2014
Wade Baldwin 5’3 Guard (Montgomery, NJ)- Baldwin showed more of his point guard skills today. He didn’t settle for his wet jumper instead he got into the lane and set teammates up for easy buckets. This transition is good for him because you never know how tall he will max out at in the future.
Class 2015
Mikey Dixon 4’10 Guard (Wilmington, DE)- Any time Dixon is playing you have to pay attention. This pint size blur is always on attack not matter the opponent or level of play. If his outside shot is hitting than most defenders are really in trouble. When watching him play you can tell he spins an enormous amount of time around the game.
